Learning Sorcery

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 6289 ):
Q1: What is meant by the saying: “Learn sorcery but do not practice it”? Because some people say that it is a weak hadith?
Volume 1: It is forbidden to learn sorcery, whether to practice it or to ward it off, and it is explicitly stated
that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, in His Noble Book, that learning it is disbelief. He, the Exalted, said:
teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieveيُعَلِّمُونَ النَّاسَ السِّحْرَ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَتَّى يَقُولاَ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ فِتْنَةٌ فَلاَ تَكْفُرْ
[Al-Baqarah 2:102]
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also explicitly stated that sorcery is one of the major sins and commanded its avoidance, saying:
Avoid the seven destructive sinsاجتنبوا السبع الموبقات
He mentioned sorcery among them. In the Sunan, according to al-Nasa'i :
Whoever ties a know and blows on it, he has practiced magic; and whoever practices magic, he has committed Shirkمن عقد عقدة ونفث فيها فقد سحر ومن سحر فقد أشرك
Sunan an-Nasa'i 4079Da'if (Darussalam)
. As for what you mentioned regarding the saying: "Learn sorcery but do not practice it," it is not a hadith, neither authentic nor weak, to our knowledge. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
