The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 5293 ):

Q: Hadiths have been reported in al-Bukhari and Muslim that Abu Talib is the one among the people who will receive the lightest punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and other hadiths state that the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) relatives who did not believe are in the Fire, and other hadiths state that his father is in the Fire. I hope you will clarify for me whether this indicates that they will remain in the Fire forever?

A: Abu Talib is the one among the people of the Fire who will receive the lightest punishment on the Day of Resurrection, due to the intercession of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for him in this matter. Allah will only alleviate the punishment he is in by the intercession of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); as narrated by Muslim in this regard from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The inhabitant of hell who will have the lightest punishment will be Abu Talib, and he will be wearing two sandals from which his brain will bubble.
Mishkat al-Masabih 5668
. And as narrated by Muslim and others from al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib that he said:
It is reported on the authority of 'Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib that he said: Messenger of Allah, have you benefited Abu Talib in any way for he defended you and was fervent in your defence? The Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) said: Yes; he would be in the most shallow part of the Fire and were not for me, he would have been in the bottom-most depth of Hell.
Sahih Muslim 209a
, and in a narration from al-Abbas :
I said: Messenger of Allah, verily Abu Talib defended you and helped you; would it be beneficial for him? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Yes; I found him in the lowest part of the Fire and I brought him to the shallow part.
Sahih Muslim 209b
, and Muslim also narrated, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned his uncle Abu Talib to him, and he said:
My intercession may benefit him on the Day of Resurrection and he may be placed in the shallow part of the Fire which would reach his ankles and his brain would be boiling.
Sahih Muslim 210
. And everyone who dies in a state of disbelief is eternally in the Fire, whether he is among the relatives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or among others; due to the generality of the statement of Allah the Exalted:
But the ones who disbelieved and denied Our verses - those are the companions of the Fire, abiding eternally therein; and wretched is the destination.
[At-Taghabun 64:10]
. And the verses that come with its meaning. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
