Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 5656 ): Q1: Did Abu Talib die a disbeliever or a believer?
A1: Abu Talib ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim died a disbeliever; because of what Allah the Exalted said to His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding Abu Talib :
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you likeإِنَّكَ لاَ تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ
[Al-Qasas 28:56]
And because of Allah’s (Glorified and Exalted is He) warning His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) not to seek forgiveness for him, as in His saying:
It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire.
[At-Tawbah 9:113]
And because it is established in the two Sahihs that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to his uncle Abu Talib when death was near him, and with him were 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Umayyah and Abu Jahl , and he said to him:
O my uncle, say: There is no god but Allah. I will argue on your behalf with this word before Allah. They said to him: O Abu Talib, do you desire to turn away from the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated it to him, and they repeated their statement. The last thing he said was: I am upon the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib, and he refused to say: There is no god but Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I will seek forgiveness for you as long as I am not forbidden from doing so.
, so Allah (Mighty and Majestic) revealed:
It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relativesمَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوا أُولِي قُرْبَى
[At-Tawbah 9:113]
the verse, and it was revealed:
Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
[Al-Qasas 28:56]
. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
