Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 9614 )
Q: My name is ('Abd al-Muttalib Ahmad Muhammad 'Abd al-Karim), I am of Sudanese nationality, and I want a fatwa regarding my name because some of my affairs are being delayed due to this.
Specifically, I went to the Shari'ah court in Riyadh to arrange a legal power of attorney, but they suspended my request until a fatwa is issued regarding the legitimacy of the name ('Abd al-Muttalib). Therefore, we ask your eminence to provide us with information.

A:Naming a person 'Abd al-Muttalib is not objectionable, andAbu Muhammad 'Ali ibn Hazmthe consensus on the prohibition of every name that implies worship of other than Allah. He said,Ibn Hazm: (They agreed on the prohibition of every name that implies worship of other than Allah, such as 'Abd 'Umar and 'Abd al-Ka'bah, and the like, except for 'Abd al-Muttalib). The Shaykh of Islam, ShaykhMuhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhabmentioned this in his book al-Tawhid. It is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he approved of this name and did not change it, specifically in the case of his cousin'Abd al-Muttalib ibn Rabi'ah, so it is an exception to the prohibited names upon which there is consensus, asIbn HazmAnd success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
