Q: I followed the series *Jad Sayyid al-Anam* (peace and blessings be upon him), and I loved 'Abd al-Muttalib and Abu Talib for that reason, as Allah knows of my love for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Do I incur a breach of my vow in that, since they died upon other than Islam? And do I incur a breach in loving them, and does this love bring me sin? Please inform me, and may Allah take care of you with His care. And may Allah send blessings upon our master Muhammad and peace be upon you.
A: The care of 'Abd al-Muttalib and the protection of Abu Talib for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and their support of him do not necessitate loving them, because 'Abd al-Muttalib died upon the religion of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, which is associating partners with Allah, and Abu Talib knew the truth but did not act upon it, and he refused to utter the testimony of faith when he was on his deathbed, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him to say it, and he said: (He is upon the religion of 'Abd al-Muttalib ). So it is obligatory to hate them for the sake of Allah and not to love them. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions and peace be upon them.
