My nephew was afflicted with cancer—may Allah protect you and all Muslims from that—and he passed away this year at the age of nineteen without having performed the obligatory Hajj.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : He says to me, "My nephew was afflicted with cancer—may Allah protect you and all Muslims from that."

The Shaykh : May Allah heal him. We ask Allah to heal him.

The questioner : He passed away this year at the age of nineteen without having performed the obligatory Hajj, knowing that he was afflicted with this disease five years ago. So, should we perform Hajj on his behalf? And is there an expiation?

The Shaykh : Here, we must ask: Does this young man have money with which he can perform Hajj? If so, then it is obligatory for someone to perform Hajj on his behalf. If he does not have money, then Hajj is not obligatory upon him, and he died free from the obligation. However, if they wish to volunteer and perform Hajj on his behalf, there is no blame on them. Yes.
