The ruling on the Tijaniyyah method and what they do of spreading a white cloth in the mosque for dhikr upon it

Fatwa number ( 117 ):

Q: The substance of the question is that the invitee, Isa Jibril, wishes to know much of what Allah the Exalted revealed to our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and he requests the kindness of informing him whether the *wird* (daily recitation) performed by the Tijaniyyah and the Tijaniyyah is valid in Islam? He has heard many Islamic schools oppose it, and the Tijaniyyah use it after the Maghrib prayer. They spread a white cloth in the mosque and sit around it, reciting "La ilaha illa Allah" and two other words with it one hundred times. He requests assistance in clarifying the truth.
A: The Islamic Shari'ah has encouraged the remembrance of Allah the Exalted and has strongly urged it, explaining that it gives life to the souls, settles the hearts, and opens the breasts. Allah the Exalted said:
(41) O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance (42) And exalt Him morning and afternoon.
[Al-Ahzab 33:41-42]
And He said:
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُمْ بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ أَلا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ
[Ar-Ra'd 13:28]

And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The example of the one who celebrates the Praises of his Lord (Allah) in comparison to the one who does not celebrate the Praises of his Lord, is that of a living creature compared to a dead one.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6407
It was narrated by al-Bukhari, and as came in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), the command to remember Allah and the encouragement thereof came in general terms, and in both it came in detailed terms. The Qur'an clarified that the remembrance of Allah is with the heart, in reverence for Allah, in magnifying Him, in awe and solemnity, or in fear of Him and desire for Him, secretly and with trepidation, without raising the voice, in the morning and evening. It clarified that prayer is the greatest remembrance of Allah. Allah the Exalted said:
(238) Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient. (239) And if you fear [an enemy, then pray] on foot or riding. But when you are secure, then remember Allah [in prayer], as He has taught you that which you did not [previously] know.
[Al-Baqarah 2:238-239]
And He said:
And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayerفَإِذَا قَضَيْتُمُ الصَّلاَةَ فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَى جُنُوبِكُمْ فَإِذَا اطْمَأْنَنْتُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلاَةَ
[An-Nisa 4:103]
In prayer there is recitation, takbir, tahlil, tasbih, tahmid, and supplication. And Allah the Exalted said:
And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech - in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.
[Al-A'raf 7:205]
. The Sunnah, both verbal and practical, clarified the types of dhikr, their times, and their manner. It clarified the dhikr of the morning and evening, in times of hardship and affliction, and at sleep and waking.
and during travel and return from it, etc., and it specified their words and their manners. In the hadith of the seven whom Allah will shade in His shade on the Day when there is no shade except His:
and a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tearsرجل ذكر الله خاليًا ففاضت عيناه
Sahih al-Bukhari 660
, so whoever remembers Allah the Exalted as came in the clarification of the Book and the Sunnah regarding the types of dhikr, their times, and their manners, has followed the guidance of Allah the Exalted and the guidance of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and earned the reward and recompense. And whoever changes the formulas of dhikr and distorts them, or alters their manners, and commits to manners in them that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not commit to, or releases what he restricted or restricts what he released, and commits to a method in performing dhikr that was not known in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nor in the time of his Companions, nor in the three generations attested to for goodness, has done wrong and innovated in the religion what Allah has not permitted, and has forbidden the reward and recompense, and has become one of those whose efforts were lost in this worldly life while they thought they were doing well. Among this is what some of the followers of the paths, such as the Tijaniyyah, committed to, namely spreading a white cloth around which the rememberers gather with "La ilaha illa Allah" and similar dhikr after Maghrib. Dhikr is prescribed, and the word "La ilaha illa Allah" is the best of what the prophets said, and dhikr with it is among the best of dhikr. But committing to spreading the white cloth, gathering around it, specifying after Maghrib for that dhikr, and performing it collectively is an innovation they invented that Allah and His Messenger did not permit. The best of deeds is what is following, and the worst is what is innovating; for the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs after me, and beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovationعليكم بسنتي وسنة الخلفاء الراشدين من بعدي، وإياكم ومحدثات الأمور، فإن كل محدثة بدعة
, and his saying:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.
Sahih Muslim 1718a
. And among this is gathering before Fajr or after it, or after 'Isha' to worship with *awrad* they placed from themselves, or dhikr with deplorable postures and swaying that is closer to games and acting and more like them. And among this is their dhikr with the word "Huwa" (He) and the word "Aha" (Ah), which are not among the names of Allah; rather, the first is the pronoun of the absent, and the second is a word of pain. So dhikr with them is among the deniable innovations. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
