Chapter: "Encouraging the words to be said by one who is afflicted with pain in any part of his body" Explanation of the hadith of Uthman ibn Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Now, a new section from this chapter.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
"Encouraging the words to be said by one who is afflicted with pain in any part of his body".
And I see, contrary to custom, that one who cares about the supplications of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) should prepare a sheet of paper and write down this supplication, first for its benefit in healing, and second for its importance, as you will see.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
From Uthman ibn Abi al-As, and in the copy I have it is Ibn Abi al-Abbas, which is a typographical error. He said: From Uthman ibn Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him):
That he complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) of a pain he felt in his body since he embraced Islam, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to him: "Place your hand on the part of your body that is paining you and say 'Bismillah' three times, and say seven times: 'I seek refuge in Allah and His Power from the evil of what I find and fear.'"
It was narrated by Malik and al-Bukhari, as he said, and by Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, and al-Nasa'i. And with Malik it is:
“I seek refuge in the dominance of Allah, and His might from the evil of what I find.” Then I did it. Allah removed (the pain) that I had, and I kept on suggesting it to my family and to others.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3891Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
And with al-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud it is similar, and they said at the beginning of their hadith:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) came to me, and I had a pain that nearly killed me, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: "Wipe with your right hand seven times, then say: 'By the Majesty of Allah and His Power.'"
.
The hadith. We return to the beginning of the hadith.
Uthman ibn Abi al-As is one of the famous Companions whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed as the leader of his tribe. He was a Thaqifi, and when he sent him to them as a leader and governor, he advised him with some instructions. Among them was his saying (peace be upon him) to him:
You are their leader, so follow the weakest of them, and do not appoint a mu'adhdhin who takes a wage for his adhan.

This noble Companion complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of a pain that had persisted with him for a long time from the day he embraced Islam. He complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of this pain, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) prescribed for him a Prophetic medicine, a purely Islamic medicine. He said to him: "Now, it is good that you write down:
Place your hand at the place where you feel pain
Sahih Muslim 2202
meaning the part of your body that is paining you
of his body which was sore and say three times “In the name of God,” and seven times, “I seek refuge in من جسدك وقل بسم الله ثلاثا وقل سبع مرات أعوذ بالله
Mishkat al-Masabih 1533
, and in the other narration:
By the might of Allah
So say seven times: I seek refuge in Allah, or in the might and power of Allah, from the evil of what I feel and what I fear
. So this man did what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described for him, and he returned healthy, feeling no pain in his body.
In this hadith, there is the permissibility of seeking refuge in an attribute of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Seeking refuge in Allah is a well-known, mass-transmitted matter in Islam. As for seeking refuge in an attribute of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), it may not be as famous in terms of narration as the first matter, which is seeking refuge in Allah (Mighty and Majestic), meaning by the Greatest Name of Allah.
So in this hadith, as in other hadiths, there is the permissibility for a Muslim to seek refuge in an attribute of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because the attribute of Allah is eternal and ancient, just as His Essence is. Therefore, the one who seeks refuge in Allah is like the one who seeks refuge in an attribute of Allah; he is not seeking refuge in a created thing.
And from this, some scholars took the permissibility of swearing by an attribute of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Among the questions that are sometimes asked about this is: Is it permissible to swear by the Qur'an?
The answer is yes, because the Qur'an is the speech of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). And this answer is derived from the correct belief of the people of the Sunnah and the community that the Qur'an is the speech of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). And since that is the case, it is permissible to swear by it, just as it is permissible to seek refuge in the speech of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And that came explicitly
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created
Sunan Abi Dawud 3899Da'if in chain (Al-Albani)
among the established Prophetic seekings of refuge. His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created
Sunan Abi Dawud 3899Da'if in chain (Al-Albani)
. And Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) was among those who used this as an argument against the Mu'tazilah, the followers of the Abbasid Caliph al-Ma'mun at that time, when the people were afflicted with the saying that the Qur'an is created. This saying was spread by the Mu'tazilah in the time of al-Ma'mun, and many discussions took place there between the people of the Sunnah on one hand and the people of the Mu'tazilah on the other hand in general, and between Imam Ahmad and the Mu'tazilah on the other hand in particular. And among the arguments Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) used against the Mu'tazilah, who said that the Qur'an is not truly the speech of Allah but is created, was his saying to them: If the Qur'an were created speech of Allah, it would not be permissible to seek refuge in it. And it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) his saying:
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created
Sunan Abi Dawud 3899Da'if in chain (Al-Albani)
. Similarly, we say that every hadith like our hadith in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seeks refuge in the Majesty of Allah and His Power, it is permissible for us to say that it is permissible to swear by the Majesty of Allah and His Power, just as it is permissible for us to swear by the speech of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because all of that returns to swearing by Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and His attributes.
So this is the routine for treating the diseases that befall a person and afflict him. This is a very important matter, especially regarding diseases whose causes are hidden from doctors. Here, only Prophetic medicine is of benefit in mentioning it. The summary of that is to say "Bismillah" three times, placing his finger on the place that is paining him, and then seeking refuge in Allah (Mighty and Majestic) as came in this hadith:
I seek refuge in the might and power of Allah from the evil of what I feel and what I fear
Sunan Ibn Majah 3522Sahih (Darussalam)
. Then he will be cured by the permission of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
The hadith that follows it is very weak in its chain of narration.
