The Shaykh : Perhaps you have heard from some of the shaykhs, or the Sufis, or the members of the tariqahs, that they recite in their gatherings, which they call gatherings of dhikr, addressing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the words of al-Busiri:
"For from your generosity are the world and its rival, *** And from your knowledge is the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen."
The Shaykh: Have you not heard this?
The questioner : I have not heard it.
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), but I am reminding you now. You must have heard it, if you have not heard it as I said. They use this to draw near to Allah, and they recite this hymn, addressing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a word of disbelief. I know that in Syria, when they held a gathering of dhikr, they would bring a vessel containing water, which they call a sharbah. What do you call it?
The questioner : A sharbah.
The Shaykh : A sharbah. Do you know what this is? A clay vessel, like this sharbah, do you see this? A clay vessel filled with water, which they place in the middle of the circle while they recite, are delighted, sway, and address the Messenger (peace be upon him) with their saying:
"For from your generosity are the world and its rival, *** And from your knowledge is the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen."
The questioner : Its rival! What does "its rival" mean?
The Shaykh : The rival is the Hereafter. "For from your generosity are the world and its rival" means: the Hereafter.
The questioner : The world and the Hereafter.
The Shaykh : And this is the very essence of disbelief, for how can a Muslim imagine that a Muslim—generosity in the world is not a problem—but the Hereafter, which the Messenger (peace be upon him) described with his saying:Sahih Muslim 2825, and in which the greatest blessing is the seeing of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in the Hereafter, as the Lord of the Worlds said: [Al-Qiyamah 75:22-23], and He said in the Noble Qur'an: [Yunus 10:26]: For those who do good in the world, who believed in Allah and His Messenger, is the best, namely Paradise, and an increase, namely the seeing of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in the Hereafter. It came in some hadiths that the people of Paradise, when they see their Lord, forget the pleasure of Paradise, without a doubt. This is very natural when a person sees a beloved from among the people of clay, he forgets everything. So what about this person seeing the Lord of the Worlds? How can it be said that an ordinary Muslim bestows the world and is generous with the world and its rival, the Hereafter? If this statement were attributed to the least knowledgeable and least righteous Muslim, it would be a great error. So how is this statement attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?! Then: "And from your knowledge is the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen." And you know, I think: "min" (from) indicates part of a whole. Do you know this?
The questioner: Yes.
The Shaykh :[At-Tawbah 9:103] So here he addresses the Messenger (peace be upon him), who said to the slave girl: Sahih al-Bukhari 7380, he says:
"For from your generosity are the world and its rival, *** And from your knowledge is the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen."
The knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen encompasses everything that was and what will be. So the Messenger (peace be upon him) encompassed this with knowledge, and this is part of his knowledge. So all of this is found in the beliefs of many Muslims today.
The questioner : Tawhid al-asma' wa al-sifat (oneness of the names and attributes)... regarding the negation of the attributes attributed to Abu Hanifah?
The Shaykh : You have done well. We have not yet reached that point. I want to remind you of things you may hear so that you are aware that they have no connection to Islam.
"For from your generosity are the world and its rival, *** And from your knowledge is the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen."

There would be bounties which the eye has not seen and the ear has not heard and no human heart has ever perceived them
(22) [Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, (23) Looking at their Lord.
For them who have done good is the best [reward] and extra
The questioner: Yes.
The Shaykh :
Take, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity
None has the knowledge of the Unseen but Allah.
For from your generosity are the world and its rival, *** And from your knowledge is the knowledge of the Tablet and the Pen."
