The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : It is observed in many mosques that there are barriers in the first row on which worshippers lean while waiting for prayer or after prayer. However, we notice that some people rely on them with their legs while standing or bowing in prayer. And some lean on them with their backs while sitting in the tashahhud. Is their action correct? And what is obligatory to do in our mosques regarding these leaning supports?

The Shaykh : I see no harm in the leaning supports, provided that passing over them is easy, because some leaning supports are raised high, making it difficult for one who wants to pass over them. If they are short and do not make it difficult for one who wants to pass over them, there is no harm in them. As for relying on them, the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) mentioned that if a person relies on a pillar while standing, relying on it completely such that if the pillar were removed he would fall, then his obligatory prayer is not valid, because he has not stood in a manner where he relies on his own limbs. However, if that is while sitting, there is no harm in leaning on them, even if it is a complete lean. But relying on his own limbs is better.
