Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: ((O you who believe! When the call is made for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah...))

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :
O you who have believed
[Al-Baqarah 2:104]
Listen to the address. From where did this call originate? It originated from Allah (Mighty and Majestic). To whom? To those who believe. How sweet is this description by which Allah describes you, O believer! So when you hear Allah say:
O you who have believed
[Al-Baqarah 2:104]
honoring you and elevating your status,
O you who have believed
[Al-Baqarah 2:104]
be alert, be alert. What is this call? And what does the caller want from us? Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: إذا سمعت الله يقول : يا أيها الذين آمنوا فأرعها سمعك، فإما خيرٌ تؤمر به، وإما شرٌّ تنهى عنه When you hear Allah say: O you who believe, then give it your hearing, for either you will be commanded to do good, or you will be forbidden from doing evil. Attentively listen to this address.
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:9]
The call to prayer is made by the well-known adhan. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) entered Madinah—listen to the story—and the people did not have an Islamic state. So he established the Islamic state from the time he migrated, and they would gather to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to pray with him, but there was no call. So they consulted among themselves: How do we gather the people for prayer? Some said: Strike a bell. What is a bell? Yahya, what is a bell?
The student: Among the Christians.

The Shaykh : Yes, the Christians strike it during prayer in the church. Yes, what is it? Muhammad, what is a bell?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : If they want to? Pray in the church, meaning like a large bell. And some said: Let us make a horn, a horn that is blown and has a loud sound so that the people will attend. Others suggested: Light a great fire that the people of the town can feel, so they know that the time has entered. How many suggestions were there? Three. All of these were rejected. The bell is for the Christians, the horn is for the Jews, and the fire is for the Zoroastrians. They did not agree to any of these. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) guided them to the truth. Abdullah ibn Zayd ibn 'Abd Rabbih (may Allah be pleased with him) saw in a dream during the consultations; he saw a man with a horn in his hand. He said to him: Will you sell this to me? He said: Yes. But what will you do with it? He said: I will call to prayer with it. He said: No, shall I not direct you to something better than that? He said: Yes. So he called the entire adhan. The whole adhan in the dream. When morning came, he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to inform him that he had seen such and such. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It is indeed a true dream—the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) confirmed it, because it is a true dream, and the opposite of truth is what? Falsehood—it is a true dream, but go to Bilal, for his voice is more resonant than yours, so teach him the adhan to call the people with it
. No sooner did 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) hear it than he came running, saying:
By Allah, I saw the same (dream) as him.
Sunan Ibn Majah 706
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) confirmed the dream and ruled that it was true, and it was then supported by the testimony of another man, who was? 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). And thus the adhan was established in the second year of the Hijrah. The adhan was established until the Day of Resurrection. And we ask Allah the Exalted not to cut it off and not to cut us off from hearing it. This adhan has remained until our day. The call is made for prayer on Friday when the khatib arrives. In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), there were not two adhans. In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), there was one adhan. When the khatib arrived, he would greet the people and sit on the minbar, and then the mu'adhdhin would call the adhan. When the people increased in the time of 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and Madinah expanded, 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) added a third adhan. A first adhan, meaning: the first adhan, the second adhan, and the iqamah, making three. So the adhan for Jumu'ah was called twice: once before the arrival of the imam, and once at the arrival of the imam. Which one was in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)? The second one, which is at the presence of the imam. A recent incident claimed by some of the youth: that the first adhan for Jumu'ah is a religious innovation. A religious innovation! Fools of dreams, fools. They said: It is a religious innovation. Why? He said: Because it was not in the time of the Messenger, glory be to Allah! But the Messenger, yes, did not do it, but he legislated it. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) legislated it? Yes, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah
Who?
The Rightly Guided Caliphs
And 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them) by the consensus of the Muslims. So following 'Uthman in that is by the command of whom? By the command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). And the reason for which 'Uthman added this adhan did not exist in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), so it cannot be said: It was found in his time and he did not do it. So instituting it after him is a religious innovation. Then we say: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) legislated an adhan for a time other than prayer, other than Friday. And that was in Ramadan. In Ramadan, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had two mu'adhdhins: the first was Bilal and the second was Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum. And Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) would call the adhan before Fajr. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He said: "The call is made to wake up your sleepers and to return your standers, so eat and drink until you hear the call of Ibn Umm Maktum, for he does not call until the dawn appears."
. So this is an adhan before prayer for a purpose that does not relate to prayer; it also relates to the suhur meal. So how about the adhan for Jumu'ah, which relates to the prayer itself, so that the people come to it early, so that the people come to it early. So is the first adhan for Jumu'ah prescribed or not prescribed? Prescribed, praise be to Allah. And the intended meaning of the noble verse:
When the call is made for prayer on the day of Jumu'ah
is the second adhan, which is at the presence of the imam. Now, who is the caller when the call is made for prayer? Who is the caller? It is not specified. It is not named in the verse. But it is known by practice. So the adhan for Jumu'ah is the adhan for the remaining five prayers. Yes, so the mu'adhdhin for Jumu'ah is the mu'adhdhin for the remaining five prayers.
