The Reciter: Chapter: The Beginning of the Adhan, and His saying, Mighty and Majestic:
And when you call to prayer, they take it in ridicule and amusement. That is because they are a people who do not use reason.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:58]
and His saying:
When the call is made for prayer on the day of Jumu'ah

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
In these two verses, the reference to the adhan is in His saying:
And when you call to prayer
[Al-Ma'idah 5:58]
, and His saying
they take it in ridicule and amusement
[Al-Ma'idah 5:58]
means that they began to mock the adhan and the calling of people to prayer with these invocations. These are the hypocrites and the Jews, and likewise the Christians mock the Muslims when they call to prayer.
That is because they are a people who do not use reason.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:58]
means they are not people of intellect. The intellect intended here is the intellect of sound judgment, not the intellect of perception, because intellect is divided into two parts: the intellect of perception, which is the basis of legal accountability that you hear in the conditions of worship, where it is required that one be of age and sane; and the second is the intellect of sound judgment, which is good conduct or proper conduct. This is what earns praise and commendation if a person is granted it. And here
because they are a people who do not use reason.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:58]
means which intellect?
The Student: Sound judgment

The Shaykh : Yes, the intellect of sound judgment. If it had been the intellect of perception, they would not have been held accountable, but it is the intellect of sound judgment. And His saying:
when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:9]
, when the call is made for prayer on the day of Jumu'ah. The call here is the call that occurs when the preacher arrives, because it is the call known in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). The first call on Jumu'ah did not come until the time of the Rightly Guided Caliph 'Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), when Madinah expanded. He appointed mu'adhdhins so that distant people would come, so he established this adhan. It is a sunnah, a sunnah by the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), where he said:
You must therefore follow my sunna and that of the rightly guided Caliphs
Mishkat al-Masabih 165Sahīh (Zubair `Aliza'i)
. And let not the one who pretends to be a Salafi innovator say that this is a bid'ah, saying, "This is a bid'ah," thereby misleading the Rightly Guided Caliph and the Ummah after him. This is what has led some students of knowledge in our time to self-admiration, arrogance, and viewing others as small, and the like. It is said to him, "You are the innovator, you are the misguided one." 'Uthman ibn 'Affan is a Rightly Guided Caliph whom we are commanded to follow. He comes and pretends, asking, "Why did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) not do it? Is he in ignorance, or is he concealing the law of Allah?" We say, he is not in ignorance, and far be it from him. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is the most knowledgeable of creation regarding the Shari'ah of Allah, and he does not conceal what Allah has legislated. But 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) legislated or established this adhan for a reason, which was the expansion of Madinah. This reason was not known in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). If this pretender says, "How can he legislate a worship?" We say, he legislated a worship because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) legislated the adhan for what is less than that. If Bilal calls the adhan at night in Ramadan to wake the sleeper and return the one who is standing, and this is not a time of prayer, yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) legislated for him to call the adhan, so he called it. The result is that His saying, Exalted is He:
When the call is made for prayer
, what is intended by it? The second call. As for the first call, it was not known at the time of the revelation of the Qur'an, but it was established by the Rightly Guided Caliph whom we are commanded to follow. And in His saying:
on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday] من يوم الجمعة
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:9]
, there is evidence that the adhan on days other than Jumu'ah does not require rushing to the prayer for which the call was made, because Allah specified that for the day of Jumu'ah. The point is that the call on the day of Jumu'ah is followed by the khutbah, which is from the remembrance of Allah, as He said:
So hasten to the remembrance of Allah
. Then He said:
Then when you have completed the prayer
. So He distinguished between the khutbah, which He called "remembrance," and the prayer, which He called "prayer." As for days other than Jumu'ah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tied the ruling to the iqamah, so he said:
If you hear the Iqamah, you must walk to the prayer (place) with tranquility and dignity
Bulugh al-Maram 2:329
. But the adhan alerts the person to prepare and get ready for prayer. Yes.
The Reciter: It was narrated to us by 'Imran ibn Maysar

The Shaykh : In a question, in questions
