Explanation of the hadith of 'Iyadh ibn Himar (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: (Indeed, Allah revealed to me that you should be humble.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then he narrated the same hadith from the same Companion with some detail and benefit, as part of the previous hadith mentioned earlier: He narrated from 'Iyadh ibn Himar that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah has revealed to me that you should be humble so that none of you will oppress anyone else and none of you will disdain another.' I said, 'Messenger of Allah, what do you think I should do when a man reviles me in a low assembly and then I answer him back? Do I incur any wrong action in doing that?' He replied, 'Two men who revile one another are two shaytans who accuse one another and deny one another.'" إن الله أوحى إليَّ أن تواضعوا حتى لا يبغي أحد على أحد ، ولا يفخر أحد على أحد ، فقلت : يا رسول الله أرأيت لو أن رجلًا سبني في ملإ هم أنقص مني ، فرددت عليه هل عليَّ في ذلك جناح ؟ قال : المستبان شيطانان يتهاتران ويتكاذبان
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 428
: In this hadith, there is an additional phrase in the question where 'Iyadh said:
what do you think I should do when a man reviles me in a low assembly أرأيت لو أن رجلًا سَبَّني في ملأٍ هم أنقص مني
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 428
: This is because the soul remains stirred up to avenge itself with more than what Allah has permitted it, saying:
when a man reviles me in a low assembly لو أن رجل سَبَّني في ملأٍ هم أنقصُ مني
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 428
meaning: He insulted him, and he is from a tribe, and his tribe is lower than the tribe of the one insulted in terms of prestige, lineage, fame, nobility, and the like. So this questioner, who is 'Iyadh ibn Himar, says: Is there any sin on me if I retaliate against him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said—the wording of the previous hadith—:
Those who revile one another are two shaytans who accuse one another and deny one another. المستبَّان شيطانان يتهاتران ويتكاذبان
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 427
