And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Charity does not decrease wealth, no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honor, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises his status.

Narrated by al-Bukhari”

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These are the hadiths that the author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in the book *Riyad al-Salihin* in the chapter on humility. Among them is the hadith of 'Iyad ibn Himar (may Allah be pleased with him):
That Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, revealed to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that you should be humble
: This means that each person should be humble toward the other and not be arrogant over him, but rather treat him as his equal or honor him even more. It was the custom of the Salaf (may Allah have mercy on them) that a person among them would treat one younger than him as his son, one older than him as his father, and one his age as his brother. He would look at one older than him with a look of honor and reverence, at one younger than him with a look of compassion and mercy, and at one his age with a look of solidarity. Thus, no one oppresses another. This is among the matters that it is obligatory for a person to possess, namely humility before Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and toward his Muslim brothers. As for the disbeliever, Allah the Exalted has commanded to strive against him, to be harsh with him, and to anger and humiliate him to the extent possible. However, if he has a treaty and a guarantee of protection, it is obligatory for the Muslims to fulfill his treaty and guarantee, not to violate his guarantee, and not to harm him as long as he has a treaty.
Then he mentioned the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Charity does not diminish wealth
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2029Sahih (Darussalam)
: This means that charities do not decrease wealth, as a person might imagine, and as Satan promises. For Satan, as Allah the Exalted said:
He promises you poverty and commands you to do what is indecent
: The foul thing is anything that is considered foul, such as stinginess or otherwise. He promises the person poverty. If he wants to give charity, he says: Do not give charity, this will decrease your wealth, this will make you poor, do not give charity, hold back. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that charity does not decrease wealth. If someone asks: How does it not decrease wealth when a person has one hundred and gives ten, leaving him with ninety? It is said: This is a decrease in quantity, but it increases in quality. Then Allah opens for the person doors of provision that return to him what he spent, as Allah the Exalted said:
But whatever thing you spend [in His cause] - He will compensate it
[Saba 34:39]
meaning: He makes a replacement for it. So do not think that if you give ten from a hundred and it becomes ninety, that this decreases the wealth. Rather, it increases it in blessing and growth, and you will be provided for from where you do not expect.
no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honor
Sahih Muslim 2588
: This means that if a person forgives one who wronged him, his soul might say to him: This is humiliation, submission, and abandonment. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that Allah does not increase anyone by forgiving except in honor, meaning: He honors him and raises his status.
In this is an encouragement to forgive, but forgiveness is restricted to cases where it leads to reform, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah
[Ash-Shuraa 42:40]
. As for if it does not lead to reform but rather to corruption, then it is not commanded. An example of this: A known evil person who is known for aggression attacks another. Do we tell the one who was attacked: Forgive this evil person? No, we do not say forgive him, because he is evil. If you forgive him, he will transgress against others tomorrow or against you as well. In such a case, we say: Firmness and the best course is to take him by his collar, meaning to take your right from him and not forgive him, because forgiving people of evil and corruption is not reform, but rather it only increases them in corruption and evil. However, if there is good and kindness in forgiveness, and perhaps the one you forgave will be ashamed and not transgress against you or others, then that is better.
none humbles himself for Allah but Allah raises him
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2029Sahih (Darussalam)
: This is the proof:
none humbles himself for Allah but Allah raises him
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2029Sahih (Darussalam)
: And humility before Allah has two meanings: The first meaning is that you are humble toward the religion of Allah, so you do not be arrogant about the religion or be proud of it.
And the second is that you are humble toward the servants of Allah for the sake of Allah, not out of fear of them or hope for what they have, but for Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Both meanings are correct. Whoever is humble before Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in this world and the Hereafter, and this is an observed matter: the humble person is a place of elevation among people and has a good reputation, and people love him. Look at the humility of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), who is the noblest of creation, where a slave woman from among the slave women of Madinah would come to him, take his hand, and take him wherever she wished to help her in her need. This is while he is the noblest of creation. A slave woman from among the slave women comes, takes his hand, and takes him to wherever she wished to fulfill her need, and he does not say: Where are you taking me? Or go, I have work, or something like that. But despite this, Allah the Exalted did not increase him thereby except in honor and elevation, may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him.
