The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : I used to travel with my father when I was young and had not yet reached puberty. My father would combine the Friday prayer with the 'Asr prayer.

The Shaykh : Or the 'Asr with the Friday prayer.

The questioner : He says he combines the Friday prayer and the 'Asr.

The Shaykh : And the 'Asr.

The questioner : And I and my brothers would pray with him. Some people told him: This action is not permissible, because His Eminence Shaykh Muhammad ibn 'Uthaymeen issued a ruling to that effect. So my father went and asked, and some scholars issued a ruling for him, saying: It is permissible for you to combine the Friday prayer with the 'Asr prayer, because travel has a special characteristic. After a while, my father stopped combining them. Do we have to make up the prayers that were missed?

The Shaykh : As for the young ones, they do not have to make up the prayers, because they were below the age of puberty and thus not accountable. As for the adults, as long as they consulted a scholar, the sin is on the one who issued the ruling for them, and they owe nothing.
As for the ruling on the issue: The Sunnah indicates, indeed the Qur'an and the Sunnah indicate, that it is not permissible to combine the 'Asr prayer with the Friday prayer, neither in travel nor in residence. What is the evidence from the Noble Qur'an? The evidence is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers
[An-Nisa 4:103]
What is it?
At fixed times.
. It has a specific time. If a person prays a prayer before its time, it is not valid, unless it is established that it is combined with the prayer before it, in which case it is valid. Here we say: The Sunnah indicated that the 'Asr is not combined with the Friday prayer, despite the presence of a reason for combining, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not combine them. I ask now: Is rain a reason for combining or not? Yes? Mud in the markets is a reason for combining. This occurred during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he did not combine the 'Asr. This is in what al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others narrated from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him):
A man entered the mosque on a Friday when the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the Khutbah
Bulugh al-Maram 2:376
. - So what did 'Abd al-Rahman say? - Yes.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon when a man said: “O Messenger of Allah.” — Listen to the speech of the Companions; the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were eloquent and clear — he said: “O Messenger of Allah, the wealth has been destroyed and the roads have been cut off, so call upon Allah to send us relief.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) raised his hands, and the people raised their hands. He said: “O Allah, send us relief. O Allah, send us relief. O Allah, send us relief.” Three times. Anas, who is the narrator of this hadith, said: The sky was clear. We did not see any cloud in the sky, nor a piece of cloud. And between us and Sulayl there was no house or building — Sulayl is a mountain in Medina, known to this day by this name. Clouds come from that direction. He said: Then a cloud rose up behind it, like a shield — meaning like a blanket — it rose in the sky and spread out, and it thundered and flashed and rained. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not descend from the pulpit until the rain was dripping from his beard.
. Glory be to Allah! Indeed, Allah is Able to do all things
His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, "Be," and it is.
[Ya-Sin 36:82]
. Why was the rain dripping from his beard? Because the roof of the mosque was made of palm fronds. Do you know what a palm-frond roof is? For example, in al-Falayyah, there are orchards called a palm-frond roof, or they call it majabb or hadar, made of palm fronds. So the rain came down from above onto the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was delivering the sermon. It did not stop until the rain was dripping from his beard. Then he prayed, and the rain continued for a full week, night and day, without stopping. They did not see the sun. In the second Friday, a man, or the first man, entered and said:
O Messenger of Allah. The wealth has been drowned and the buildings have collapsed.
Where did the flood come from? From the rain. It is possible that the crops were flooded due to the heavy rains. It is possible that the livestock were swept away by the wadis and perished. As for the collapse of the buildings, that is clear, because the buildings were made of clay and they collapsed.
So call upon Allah to hold it back from us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) raised his hands and said: “O Allah, around us, but not upon us.” And he kept saying: “O Allah, upon the hills and the highlands, in the valleys and the places where trees grow.” Anas said: He did not point to any direction except that the clouds parted.
. Allahu Akbar! Glory be to Allah the Great! It cleared by the command of the Messenger. I ask you by the command of whom? By the command of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. So the people went out walking in the sun. Now, the first Friday had a reason for combining, which was the rain, and he did not combine. The second had a reason for combining, which was the mud, and he did not combine. It is well known that if combining were permissible, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) would have done it, because he was merciful and compassionate to the believers.
Whenever he was given a choice between two matters, he would choose the easier of the two, provided it was not conducive to sin.
Ash-Shama'il Al-Muhammadiyah 348Sahih (Zubair `Aliza'i)
. Then we say: Is the Friday prayer like the Zuhr prayer, or does it differ from it in rulings? It differs from it in more than thirty rulings. So how is it correct to analogize the Friday prayer to the Zuhr prayer? This is a defective analogy, due to the presence of a text that prevents the analogy, and due to the clear difference that necessitates distinction. So whoever says it is permissible to combine the 'Asr with the Friday prayer has erred. And the evidence, as you heard from the Qur'an:
Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.
[An-Nisa 4:103]
. And the principle is that the 'Asr is not prayed except when the time of 'Asr enters. And from the Sunnah, as you heard. And the analogy is not correct.
First: because it contradicts the evidence.
And second: because it is an analogy with a difference. A branch is not analogized to a root unless they are similar in every respect. Yes.
Alright, distribute the prize.
The student: These are prizes organized by the Dawah Center for a scientific course during the summer vacation for two weeks. There were a number of shaykhs, including Shaykh 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Saleh al-Dahish. And a number of students were assigned research papers.
