Continuation of the chapter: "The chapter on what is obligatory regarding assisting the distressed"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He assists him in that. For example, suppose you are a carpenter ... So if you help him, and he is unable to make any of that himself, this is a charity, even if you did not pay him any dirhams or dinars. So if you are unable to do some work to earn money and give it in charity, at the very least, assist a poor man with dependents in his needs with your body, or do for a clumsy person what is within his profession. The questioner follows the Messenger (peace be upon him) in his own self, stage by stage, and narrows the matter, and then he responds. First, he asked about the best freeing of slaves, and it became clear to him that the best freeing of slaves means having a slave whose price he can afford and giving him in charity, but he is unable ... to work and give him in charity. He said to him, "If he is unable to work and give him in charity," so he referred him to assisting some of the needy in their need with his body. He said, "What do you think if I become weak, I am not able to gather money, nor am I the one who is able to assist him with his body or in his person?" He said:
Spare people your evil. That is a sadaqa which you bestow on yourself. تدع الناس من الشر فإنها صدقة تصدقها على نفسك
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 14:47
.
So if you do not spend the high price with him, and you are unable to do a work to gather money to give in charity, and you are unable to assist a poor man with your body or another with your profession, then at the very least, stay away from evil and free people from your evil. This staying away from evil is a charity you give on behalf of yourself. And this is, in reality, from the favor of Allah upon His believing servants, where He made the Muslim's staying away from evil and harming others a charity from him that returns to himself.
