Helping him with that, for example, if you are a carpenter by trade.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Helping him with that, for example, if you are a carpenter by trade... So if you help him, and he is unable to make any of that with his own hands, then this is charity, even if you did not give him dirhams or dinars. So if you are unable to do some work to earn money and give it in charity, then at the very least, help a poor man with dependents with his needs by your physical labor, or make something for someone with a skill using your trade, soThe questioner : He follows the Messenger (peace be upon him) in his own self, stage by stage, and narrows the matter, and then he responds. In the first instance, he asked about the best of freed slaves, and it became clear to him that the best of freed slaves means having a slave whose price he can afford and giving him in charity, but he is unable... to work and give him in charity. He told him, "If you are unable to work and give him in charity," and directed him to help some of the needy with his physical labor in their need. He said, "What do you say if I am weak, I am not able to gather money, nor am I the one who can help him with his body or his person?" He said:
Spare people your evil. That is a sadaqa which you bestow on yourself. تدع الناس من الشَّرِّ ؛ فإنها صدقةٌ تصدَّقَها على نفسك
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 14:47
. So if you do not spend the high price on him, and you are unable to do work to gather money to give in charity, and you are unable to help a poor man with your body or another with your trade, then at the very least, stay away from evil and save people from your evil. So this staying away from evil is charity that you give to yourself, and this is in reality from the favor of Allah upon His believing servants, where He made the Muslim's staying away from evil and harming others a charity from him that returns to himself.
