Chapter "One who hears of a heinous act and spreads it".
What is his punishment and what is his retribution? It was narrated with a hasan chain.
From 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
'Ali ibn Abi Talib said, "The person who says something indecent and the person who makes it known are equal as far as the wrong action is concerned." القائل الفاحشة، والذي يشيع بها، في الإثم سواء
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 324
.
The one who speaks the heinous word, accusing so-and-so or so-and-so of a false accusation, and another man or woman picks it up and broadcasts it and spreads it; this picker-up is like that first liar who started it; they are equal in sin.
And this is a specific detail that meets with a general rule, which is that cooperation in righteousness and piety is commanded by the Shari'ah, and cooperation in sin and aggression is prohibited by the Shari'ah. Therefore, Allah cursed ten people regarding intoxicants: He cursed the one who drinks it, the one who is given to drink, the one who pours it, the one who is poured for, the one who squeezes it, the one for whom it is squeezed, the carrier, the one for whom it is carried, the seller, and the one for whom it is sold. And He cursed the one who eats riba (usury or interest) and the one who is given to eat it, the scribe, and the two witnesses. From this same chapter, the one who speaks the heinous act, the one who speaks it, and the one who promotes and spreads it are equal in sin. And this means that the Muslim, whether male or female, must be vigilant and not pay attention to every word he hears and then pick it up, not distinguishing between a rusty hadith and a clean one; he picks up this speech and then broadcasts it among the people; they are equal in sin. So we must be alert to all the speech that is thrown into our ears and not rush to transmit this speech except after verification. Therefore, Allah the Exalted said in the Qur'an:
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful. يأيها الذين آمنوا إن جاءكم فاسق بنبأ فتبيّنوا أن تصيبوا قوماً بجهالة فتصبحوا على ما فعلتم نادمين
[Al-Hujurat 49:6]
