Continuation of the explanation of the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father): (… and if one of you becomes angry, let him be silent).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then he (peace be upon him) said:
When one of you is angry, he should be silent. وإذا غضب أحدكم فليسكُتْ
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 245
, meaning: do not respond to your outburst of anger by speaking words that harm the one who was the cause of your anger, exactly as happened to 'Umar with that man, Hudhayfah ibn 'Uyaynah, when he surprised him with that unjust speech and said to him: "You do not give the weighty word, nor do you judge with justice." This is certainly provocative speech and a cause of anger for 'Umar, and indeed he became angry and intended to punish him by striking him with his sword. But when he was reminded of that noble verse:
Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant. خُذِ الْعَفْوَ وَأْمُرْ بِالْعُرْفِ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْجَاهِلِينَ
[Al-A'raf 7:199]
, he held back his anger and did not respond to his outburst. And so here the Messenger (peace be upon him) says:
When one of you is angry, he should be silent. وإذا غضب أحدكم فليسكُتْ
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 245
; meaning: do not speak words that transgress against the one who provoked you. Therefore, it came in the authentic hadith: "A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said to him: 'Advise me, O Messenger of Allah.' He said to him (peace be upon him):
Do not get angry لا تغضَبْ
. What surprised him was that this advice was only two words. He said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, advise me.' He said to him:
Do not get angry لا تغضَبْ
. He said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, advise me.' He said to him:
Do not get angry لا تغضَبْ
, and I saw all the good in leaving anger" ; meaning: afterwards, when he departed from the Messenger (peace be upon him) having carried with him this good advice
Do not get angry لا تغضَبْ
, whenever he was about to become angry, he would rein in his self and not become angry, and he would find the blessing of his response to the advice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So, after he had experienced the benefit of this advice in himself, he said: "And I found all the good in leaving anger." So happy is the one who responds to the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his advice, for by that he lives a good life in this world, as our Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He) said in the noble verse:
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَجِيبُوا لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ لِمَا يُحْيِيكُمْ
[Al-Anfal 8:24]
. So the Messenger (peace be upon him) always and forever calls us to adopt the noble morals, in which lies the life of the one who holds fast to them, a good life in this world before the Hereafter. And the opposite of that is the one who adopts the teachings of the Messenger (peace be upon him) and his guidance; he lives a difficult, tight, and severe life in his world, remaining always with a constricted chest, narrow, as if he were ascending into the sky. As for the one who responds to the advice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), he is like the sea, which is not muddied by the buckets. Likewise, whoever seeks and intends a good and happy life in this world, let him respond to the advice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and by that he will live in ease and comfort, because if he becomes angry, the rule for him is that he does not respond to that anger. And so was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he did not seek revenge for himself, but rather, when the inviolable rights of Allah were violated, nothing stood in the way of his anger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him). So this is advice that we must always keep before our eyes: that if we are angered, let us be silent and not respond to the one who angered us.
