The Shaykh : We have here a question, or more than one question: the first is: What is the ruling on takbir on the days of 'Id al-Fitr and 'Id al-Adha, what are the preferred times for it, and what is the formula for the takbir?
The Shaykh : This question encompasses three matters: the ruling on takbir in the two festivals, the preferred times for it, and the formula for the takbir. As for the ruling on takbir, it is obligatory, based on His saying (Mighty and Majestic):[Al-Baqarah 2:185] and other verses and hadiths. As for the preferred times for it, there is no specific time for the takbir of the two festivals; rather, it is absolute, as you heard in the previous verse. So the Muslim in the two festivals must keep alive the remembrance of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) by increasing in dhikr, without restriction or limiting it to the takbir after the prayers. These takbir after the prayers are among the newly invented matters that have no basis in the Shari'ah at all. Rather, one says takbir before the prayer, after the prayer, and between the prayers; that is, there is no specific time for the takbir of the two festivals. As for the formula for the takbir, there is no formula that came from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) himself, but it came from some of his Companions. Among what is authentic from them is what is known today in many Islamic countries, without the additions we hear here in Sham: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillah al-hamd." This only, and nothing else.
The Shaykh : This question encompasses three matters: the ruling on takbir in the two festivals, the preferred times for it, and the formula for the takbir. As for the ruling on takbir, it is obligatory, based on His saying (Mighty and Majestic):
and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا هَدَاكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
