Explanation of when it is permissible for a man to lie to his wife, and vice versa.

The Shaykh : However, sometimes a man or a woman may be compelled to speak contrary to the reality. In this narrow scope, namely the scope of dire necessity, where "dire necessities permit the prohibited," there is nothing wrong with the husband or wife adopting the dispensation mentioned in this hadith.
Personally, I believe that if the two spouses conduct their life based on dealing with truthful speech, which is the principle that every Muslim man and woman must uphold, then I believe neither will need to lie to the other, because he has not lived with her, and she has not lived with him, in a manner contrary to the principle, which is truthfulness.
By way of clarification and illustration of the precision of this dispensation, some scholars have mentioned that the lying permissible for the spouses is for him to display more love for her than he actually feels in his heart, and for her to do the same for him in her heart.
This type of lying is what the hadith scholars adopted in explaining this dispensation, which people have expanded in their use of. I say "expanded" because I know that many marital relationships are ruined due to this expansion in the use of this dispensation.
Therefore, if a man or woman has the knowledge and Islamic culture to be able to select the kind of lying that can be included in this dispensation for which the hadith came, then he or she may avail themselves of that dispensation. Otherwise, as I mentioned earlier, it is better for each of them to adhere to truthful speech with the other.
This is because the principle in speech is truthfulness, which is obligatory, and the principle in speech is to avoid lying, which is obligatory. Perhaps the author (may Allah have mercy on him) pointed to this reality when he followed the previous hadith with this subsequent chapter, where he said in the chapter after the one hundred and eightieth: "Chapter on the fact that lying is not appropriate."
