Ruling on the zakah of land kept for a time of need

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I own a piece of land, and I do not benefit from it; I keep it for a time of need. Is it obligatory for me to pay zakah on this land? And if I pay the zakah, do I have to estimate its value every time?

A: You do not owe zakah on this land, because goods are only subject to zakah on their value if they are prepared for trade. Land, real estate, cars, furniture, and the like are goods on which zakah is not due on the item itself. If one intends them as wealth, meaning currency, such that they are prepared for selling, buying, and trading, then zakah is due on their value. If they are not prepared in that manner, as in your question, then there is no zakah on them. And success is from Allah.
