The questioner : The questioner asks: What is the ruling on repeating 'Umrah on a regular basis in the month of Ramadan, and what is the authenticity of the report from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar that he performed Hajj sixty times and 'Umrah a thousand times?

The Shaykh : As for the report from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar, I do not know about it. As for repeating 'Umrah in the month of Ramadan, it is a religious innovation (bid'ah), because repeating it in one month is contrary to the practice of the Salaf. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in *al-Fatawa* that it is disliked (makruh) to repeat 'Umrah and to perform it frequently, by the consensus of the Salaf, especially for one who repeats it in Ramadan. Some of them even tell me today that he performed 'Umrah twice in one day. I saw a man, but not this year; I saw a man performing sa'y with half of his head shaved lengthwise. He had shaved it white, and the other half still had hair. I asked him why he did this, and he said, "I shaved this for yesterday's 'Umrah and left this for today's 'Umrah." See the error now; it is a compound error upon an error. The fact that he repeats 'Umrah means he must leave hair for shaving or shortening. So his mind told him to shave half for today's 'Umrah and leave half for tomorrow's 'Umrah. And if he wanted to take four 'Umrahs, he would shave a quarter. Yes, and Allah knows best.
