What is your comment on the one who says: Whoever denies the hadith: "Indeed, Allah created Adam in the image of the Most Merciful" is a Jahmi?

The questioner : Regarding the question from the brother Abd al-Rahman.

The Shaykh : Please go ahead.

The questioner : I say: O esteemed Shaykh, I read in a book titled: "That Allah created Adam in the image of the Most Merciful." It states within the book: "Whoever denies this hadith is a Jahmi". What is your comment on this?

The Shaykh : We have responded to this statement in some of my books, and it is likely in *The Weak Hadiths*. The one who denies this hadith on the basis of denying the attributes in general is the Jahmi. As for the one who denies this hadith because it is not authentic in terms of its chain of narration, it is forbidden to call him a Jahmi, especially since he believes in all the attributes that are established in the Book of Allah and in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
And added to that, is the Imam Ibn Khuzaymah a Jahmi, when he is the Imam in refuting the Jahmiyyah and the Mu'attilah?
The truth of the matter is that the issue has become confused for some people. This weak hadith has been mixed up with the authentic hadith:
for Allah created Adam in His own image إن الله خلق آدم على صورته
Sahih Muslim 2612e
This hadith is agreed upon as authentic, and it is the one whose denial is not permissible. As for the first wording:
in the image of the Most Merciful على صورة الرحمن
it is a weak hadith, as I clarified in the book mentioned earlier. And what I said lastly, namely: that denying the authentic hadith agreed upon, which is in the wording:
for Allah created Adam in His own image إن الله خلق آدم على صورته
Sahih Muslim 2612e
is what Imam Ahmad and al-Dhahabi and their like of scholars stated, that denying this hadith is Jahmiyyah.
As for the hadith in the wording you mentioned, it is a weak hadith that does not serve as a proof, first in terms of its chain of narration.
And secondly, in terms of the anomaly of its text, because it contradicts the hadith of al-Bukhari in his *Sahih* from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
for Allah created Adam in His own image إن الله خلق آدم على صورته طولُه ستون ذراعًا
Sahih Muslim 2612e
This is the hadith in *Sahih al-Bukhari*. And thus, the lack of knowledge in critiquing hadiths in terms of their chains and texts affects many people, such that it diverts them from the correct knowledge. And that is one of the effects of weak hadiths in the Ummah. This is the answer to what you asked.
