Discussion of Hajj and when it became obligatory.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the topic of this meeting, since the season of Hajj is approaching and we are currently in one of the months of Hajj, is that not so? What are the months of Hajj? You. Stand up. What are the months of Hajj? Shawwal, Dhu al-Qa'dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah. The correct view is that Dhu al-Hijjah is included in its entirety. - Sit down. - These are the months of Hajj. And we are now - also - close to one of Allah's sacred months, which is? No, it is Dhu al-Qa'dah, because Dhu al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and Muharram are these three sacred months, and the fourth is Rajab. Since we are close to Hajj, we should know who is obligated to perform Hajj? Is Hajj obligatory for every person? We should know when Hajj was made obligatory? We should know how many times the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) performed Hajj? So we say: Hajj is not obligatory except with conditions, which we will mention, if Allah wills. As for when it was made obligatory? Hajj was made obligatory in the ninth year of the Hijrah, due to the saying of the Exalted:
And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.
[Ali 'Imran 3:97]
. When was this verse revealed? In the ninth year. The entire beginning of Surat al-Imran was in the ninth year, and it is called: The Year of Delegations. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not perform Hajj in that year. But he left behind his first successor, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), to lead the pilgrims. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not perform Hajj, because he remained in Madinah to facilitate the delegations that arrived in Madinah to learn their religion, and on the other hand, in the ninth year, both the polytheists and the believers were performing Hajj. So the mu'adhdhin of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called out in that year:
No pagan shall perform Hajj after this year, and none shall perform the Tawaf around the Ka`ba in a naked state. أن لا يحج بعد العام مشرك، ولا يطوف في البيت عريان
Sahih al-Bukhari 4656
. So the tenth year became exclusive to the Muslims. It is the year in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) performed Hajj. And here is a third reason, which is that these delegations that come in the ninth year, if they become Muslims, will perform Hajj in the tenth year. That would be more gathering for the Muslims.
As for how many times the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) performed Hajj? He did not perform Hajj after the Hijrah except once, except once. Before the Hijrah, it is reported in the Sunan that he performed Hajj once as well. But what is established is that after the Hijrah, he did not perform Hajj except once, (peace and blessings be upon him).
