An explanation of the forms of deception employed by the Jews regarding the Sabbath and other matters, Allah’s condemnation of them, and an explanation of the state of those from this Ummah who agree with them in deceiving regarding riba.

The Shaykh : And the story of the prohibition by the Lord of the Worlds upon them to work on the Sabbath, and how they deceived regarding working by catching fish on Sunday, is well known and not hidden from you—if Allah wills. However, in my opinion, there is a hadith that few Muslims today know, which confirms that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, cursed the Jews not only because of their deception in catching fish on the Sabbath, but also because of other matters they committed in which they deceived to commit what Allah has forbidden. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Allah has cursed the Jews. The fats were forbidden to them, so they melted them and then sold them and ate their price. And indeed, when Allah forbids the eating of something, He forbids its price.
. The hadith is comprehensible in general, but it contains a word that some people may not understand, which is his saying, peace and blessings be upon him:
So they melted them فجملوها
. The meaning of "fajammalūhā" is: they melted them.
Let there be the curse of Allah upon the Jews that fat was declared forbidden for them, but they melted it
Sahih Muslim 1582a
Meaning: they melted them. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, pointed to this kind of prohibition in His saying, the Exalted:
For wrongdoing on the part of the Jews, We made unlawful for them [certain] good foods which had been lawful to them
[An-Nisa 4:160]
from these good things, that they not eat the fat. But they did not have patience with this divine ruling, which is just, so they deceived regarding it by taking these fats and throwing them onto the pots and lighting the fire underneath them, so they melted and took a form other than the natural form of the fat. So Satan made it attractive to them that this fat, which was forbidden to them in their law, had become lawful because of the change in its form. Thus, our Lord, Mighty and Majestic, did not relate to us their story on the Sabbath, nor did His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, relate how they deceived regarding eating the fat forbidden to them, merely as a story, but as a lesson
There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding
[Yusuf 12:111]
. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said in the authentic hadith that al-Bukhari narrated from the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said:
You will follow the wrong ways, of your predecessors so completely and literally that if they should go into the hole of a mastigure, you too will go there.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3456
. And in the narration of al-Tirmidhi—may Allah have mercy on him:
There was among them one who would come to his mother on the side of the road, and there would be among you one who would do that.
. And the reality of Muslims today, with great regret, realizes much or little of this report.
You will follow the wrong ways, of your predecessors so completely and literally that if they should go into the hole of a mastigure, you too will go there.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3456
There is no doubt that Muslims today, when the general public try to make riba lawful, and some of the elite make it permissible by twisting and turning, as the Jews did in their catching on the Sabbath and as they melted the fats—and the fat remains what it is—now they name riba, if you wish to know in one word how Satan deceived the Muslims and moved them away from a great part of their Shari'ah, by naming the things forbidden by the explicit text of the Book and the Sunnah with easy, soft names. You hardly hear anyone of them today say: "I put money in the bank but I do not take riba." You do not hear the word riba today at all, but rather "interest." I do not take interest. Why did this terminology become common today?!
This is part of the scheme of Satan against the children of Adam, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, pointed to some of that when he said:
The Hour will not stand until there will be among my Ummah people who drink intoxicants and call it by a name other than its own.
. They drink the intoxicants forbidden by the Book, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Ummah, under a name other than its own. What is it, for example?
Whiskey, nabidh. These are soft, pleasant words on the tongue, but they are foul in the balance, because they depict to the person that this sin has no value. Similarly, Satan came to them through the door of naming riba as "interest." And who would refrain from benefiting from interest?!
You hardly find anyone who does any of that except those whom Allah has protected.
