A man wore socks and shoes, then wiped over the shoes only, and when he reached the mosque he took off the shoes and prayed wearing only the socks

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace.

The questioner : The second issue states: A man wore socks and shoes, then wiped over the shoes only, and when he reached the mosque he took off the shoes and prayed wearing only the socks. And this is his method until the end of the wiping period. So what is the ruling on his method, may Allah guide you?

The Shaykh : This is a mistake, because the rule is that if a person wipes over something, the ruling attaches to it. So if he wipes over the shoes and then takes them off and wants to perform ablution, he must perform a complete ablution by washing his feet. For this reason, we say that the best thing in such a situation is to wipe over the socks, meaning the socks, so that he is free from the issue of the shoes.

The questioner : And what is the ruling on his action?

The Shaykh : Yes. I hope there is no harm in what he did, because it has been said by some scholars. But in the future, he should not do it.
