What is the ruling on wiping over boots, and does a person pray in them or take them off?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Please proceed.

The questioner : What is the ruling on wiping over boots, and does a person pray in them or take them off? Then, if he takes them off, is it necessary for him to wipe over the socks, or is he content with the wiping that was on the boots?

The Shaykh : First: It must be kept in mind that wiping over anything worn on the feet is permissible, provided its condition is met, which is: that it be worn while in a state of ritual purity. Whether this item is a boot, a leather sock, a sock, or a sandal, anything worn on the foot may be wiped over, subject to the condition mentioned above. Is that clear?

The questioner : It is clear.

The Shaykh : Now, if the wearer—whatever it is from what we mentioned—wore it while in a state of ritual purity, then wiped over it, and then removed this item that was wiped over, his ablution remains as it was. He does not need to repeat the ablution, nor does he need to wash his feet, at the very least. Then, if he remains, for example, in his socks, and as we said, just as he wore the boots while in a state of ritual purity, so too he must have worn the socks while in a state of ritual purity. If he removes the boots, we say that his ablution remains as it was, as long as it has not been invalidated by one of the things that invalidate ablution. So, if he has removed the boots and is still wearing the socks, and then his ablution is invalidated, when he performs a new ablution, he also wipes over his socks, as long as he wore them while in a state of ritual purity. However, if he returns to wearing the boots, it is not permissible to wipe over them, because the condition for wiping is that they be worn while in a state of complete ritual purity, meaning: in a state of ablution with the washing of the feet. So here, we have reached the point where he wiped over the socks a second time, then his ablution was invalidated, so he performed ablution, wiped over the socks, and put on the boots. In this case, he did not put on the boots while in a state of complete ritual purity, because he had wiped over the socks and then put on the boots over the socks. Therefore, it is not permissible for him to wipe over the boots; rather, he must thereafter remove them and wipe over the socks until the duration of wiping has passed. This duration is one day and one night for the resident, and three days and their nights for the traveler. This is the answer to what you asked.
