The ruling on wiping over boots, and whether a person prays in them or takes them off?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The ruling on wiping over boots, and whether a person prays in them or takes them off? And if he takes them off, is it necessary for him to wipe over the socks, or is what he did on the boots sufficient?

The Shaykh : First, it must be clear in the mind that wiping over anything worn on the feet is permissible, provided the condition is met; that is, it must be worn while in a state of ritual purity. Whether this item is a boot, a leather sock, a sock, or a sandal, anything worn on the foot may be wiped over, subject to the condition mentioned earlier. Is that clear?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Now, if the wearer puts on any of the items we mentioned while in a state of ritual purity, then wipes over it, and then removes that item, his ablution remains as it is, and he does not need to repeat his ablution... nor does he need to wash his feet, at the very least. Then, if he remains, for example, in his socks, and as we said, just as he put on the boots while in a state of ritual purity, he would have put on the socks while in a state of ritual purity. So, if he takes off the boots, we say that his ablution remains as it was, as long as it has not been invalidated by one of the things that break the ablution. If he remains having taken off the boots and is still wearing the socks, and then his ablution is invalidated, when he performs ablution anew, he wipes over his socks as well, as long as he put them on while in a state of ritual purity. However, if he returns to wearing the boots, it is not permissible to wipe over them; because the condition for wiping is that he must have put them on while in a state of complete ritual purity; that is, in a state of ablution with the washing of the feet. So here, we have reached the point where he wiped over the socks a second time, then his ablution was invalidated, so he performed ablution, then he wiped over the socks and put on the boots; in this case, he did not put on the boots while in a state of complete ritual purity; because he had already wiped over the socks, so he put on the boots over the socks; therefore, it is not permissible for him to wipe over the boots, and rather, he must thereafter take them off and wipe over the socks until the duration of wiping has passed, which is one day and one night for the resident, and three days and their nights for the traveler.
And this is the answer to what you asked.
