What is the relationship between humans and jinn?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward you. What is the relationship between humans and jinn? Is it possible for a human to marry...?

The Shaykh : It is possible that there is some relationship between a human and a jinni. It does not concern us whether this is actually possible or not. What matters is whether, if this relationship is possible, it is permissible for a Muslim to realize it? That is what is important. For example, some people still doubt that the disbelievers have reached the sky today, specifically the moon, and other planets. It does not concern us whether this is possible or not, but we say: Is this permissible by the Shari'ah or not?
The Shaykh: We say: If it occurs, it is permissible. This is the last example I am bringing up. As for the connection between humans and jinn, if it occurs, it is not permissible. This is what is important: to know the legal ruling. Because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says:
And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden. وأنه كان رجال من الإنس يعوذون برجال من الجنِّ فزادوهم رهقًا
[Al-Jinn 72:6]
, and it is reported in "Sahih al-Bukhari" and others that the fortune-tellers in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance had companions from the jinn. The jinni companion would ascend to the sky and eavesdrop on what is happening there among the angels. He would snatch a word and descend with it, then recite it and throw it into the ear of his human companion. However, he would have added ninety-nine lies to it. So this human companion... from among the people, is informed by his jinni companion of a hundred reports: one report is true because he heard it from the angels, and the remaining ninety-nine are all lies. He is truthful in the one report and lies in the rest. This connection between humans and jinn was a cause for the exploitation of humans by this type of human by the jinn. And this, as they say, history repeats itself in this time. So you must have read in the newspapers and magazines, especially "Al-Muslimun" newspaper recently, where I followed up on this topic with some... and benefit.
The Shaykh: So the point is, we can believe that it is possible—finally I say—that a human can connect with a jinni. But this does not mean that it is permissible. Just as it is possible for a Muslim man to connect with a disbelieving woman; this is possible, but is it permissible by the Shari'ah? Of course, it is not permissible by the Shari'ah.
The Shaykh: If we know this, then there are matters mentioned in history that prove the possibility of connection between humans and jinn, and marriage as well. But this goes back to the report of those who claim to marry among them and the jinn women—for example. Al-Hafiz al-Dimashqi Ibn al-Dhahabi mentioned in his book "Mizan al-I'tidal fi Naqd al-Rijal," in the biography of Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn 'Arabi, and not Ibn 'Arabi, the indefinite Ibn 'Arabi, who is the author of books full of misguidance; such as: "Al-Futuhat al-Makkiyyah" and "Fusus al-Hikam" and the like. He mentioned in his biography the ecstatic utterances in his books, which the Sufis call ecstatic utterances, and we say: the misguidances and disbelief in them. Then he mentioned that it was among his beliefs that it is not possible for a human to marry a jinni. So he was seen one day with his head bound with a bandage. He was asked: What is the matter? He said: I married a woman from the jinn, and I had a disagreement with her, so she threw a wooden sandal at me!! Do you know a wooden sandal? The jinni wife threw a wooden sandal at him and gashed him, and that is why he bandaged his head.
The Shaykh: The distinguished biographer al-Dhahabi hints that this man, at the time when he believed that connection and marriage between humans and jinn were not possible, suddenly said that he married a woman, and this disagreement occurred between them until she gashed his head.
The Shaykh: So the point that matters from this question is that we know that connection and the attachment of humans to jinn is possible in light of the verse and the hadith, and some historical events. But that is not permissible Islamically because of the exploitation of their connection to the jinn by humans, and their deviation from the path of the Shari'ah.
The Shaykh: In conclusion, I say—because of what has preceded: The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever goes to a diviner or a fortune-teller and believes in what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). من أتى عرافًا أو كاهنًا ؛ فصدَّقه بما يقول ؛ فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد - صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم -
