The Method of Question and Answer in Education
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The methods of knowledge and seeking knowledge are numerous and varied. Among them is what is explicitly mentioned in the Book of Allah and in the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), namely the method of question and answer. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says in the clear text of His Book: [An-Nahl 16:43], and He says: . Our Prophet (may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him) said in a well-known story in the Sunan: . He said this (peace and blessings be upon him) when one of the Companions was wounded in a raid he participated in with the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He was struck with many wounds in his body. Then, at night, he had a wet dream. When morning came, he asked those around him if they knew of a dispensation for him not to perform the full ritual bath, due to his wounds. They answered him that he must perform the full ritual bath. So he performed it, and it resulted in his death and destruction. When the news of his death reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he became very angry and said: . The cure for ignorance, meaning what is the cure and remedy for it? It is asking questions.
Often, seeking knowledge through the method of questions and answers is more beneficial for many students of knowledge than delivering lectures or fiqh lessons. This is because these lessons may contain things that do not concern the listeners, unlike questions, which each person addresses with what concerns him in his life and in the matters of his worship. Accordingly, it has been our practice for decades to allow our brothers, the students of knowledge, to direct their questions so that we may address answering them with what Allah has made easy for us, if we have knowledge of it. Otherwise, as you know, half of knowledge is saying "I do not know." So, let the brother in charge of asking questions please proceed.
So ask the people of the message if you do not know.
فاسألوا أهل الذكر إن كنتم لا تعلمونSo ask a knowledgeable person
فَسْئَلْ بِهِ خَبِيراًDid they not ask when they were ignorant? Indeed, the cure for ignorance is asking.
ألا سألوا حين جهلوا ، فإنما شفاء العيِّ السؤالThey killed him, may Allah kill them. Did they not ask when they were ignorant? Indeed, the cure for ignorance is asking.
قتلوه قاتلهم الله ، ألا سألوا حين جهلوا ! فإنما شفاء العيِّ السؤالOften, seeking knowledge through the method of questions and answers is more beneficial for many students of knowledge than delivering lectures or fiqh lessons.
