The questioner : The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said in this hadith: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 24:120
The Shaykh : Yes
The questioner : Well, addressing him by the name of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) means that the situation called for him to say, “O Messenger of Allah,” to teach the Companions. Why did he not do that?
The Shaykh : Yes, he came to teach them their religion through what he asked about, namely Islam, faith, and excellence in worship. It was not in his own style; his style might be subject to scrutiny. For this reason, the scholars said that it is derived from his statement “to teach you your religion” that if a man asks about something, and he is knowledgeable about it in order to teach others, he is considered a teacher, even if the teaching comes from someone else, considering that he is the cause, so he becomes as if he is the teacher.
This is Jibril who has come to you to teach you your religion.
