What is better for the traveler: fasting or breaking the fast?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is it better for the traveler to fast or to break the fast?

The Shaykh : What I believe in this matter is that the better option for the fasting person is the easier one for him, and people differ greatly in this regard. This is because for some people, it is burdensome to fast while the people around them are breaking their fasts, so they prefer fasting while traveling to fasting while resident, with the people around them— as I mentioned— breaking their fasts. Other people are the opposite; it does not matter to them if they fast while resident and resting while the people around them are breaking their fasts, but rather it is difficult for them to fast while traveling. Therefore, a correct and explicit hadith came in "Sahih Muslim" when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to that Companion— his name is probably Amr ibn Hamzah al-Aslami— who asked him, as he travels a lot, whether he should fast or break his fast. His answer (peace and blessings be upon him) was:
If you wish, then fast, and if you wish, then break your fast. إن شئت فصُمْ ، وإن شئت فأفطِرْ
Sunan Ibn Majah 1662Sahih (Darussalam)
, and this is the principle in this matter; so every person who is accountable chooses what is easier for him, as I mentioned earlier. However, it should be noted that if the traveler prefers to fast, it is not permissible for him to fast if he exposes himself to hardship. In this context, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) is understood:
It is not an act of righteousness to fast while traveling. ليس من البرِّ الصِّيام في السَّفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1664Sahih (Darussalam)
; meaning: the fasting that exposes the fasting person to some hardship; so it is not of righteousness in any way. Accordingly, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) came when he was traveling and saw people who had shaded a companion of theirs, as if he had fainted due to his fasting, and it was a hot day; so he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
Those are the disobedient ones أولئك هم العصاة
; meaning: those who fast while traveling and expose themselves to such hardship; so it is disobedience to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If the traveler's fasting does not expose him to any of this hardship, then the matter is as I mentioned earlier: if he wishes, he fasts, and if he wishes, he breaks his fast.
Yes.
