The questioner: ... Al-Azwa'i said: Yahya—meaning ibn Abi Kathir—narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Taymi, from Ya'qub or ibn Ya'qub, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The belt of the believer is at the muscles of his legs, then at the middle of his legs, then at his ankles; and whatever is below that is in the Fire أزرة المؤمن إلى عضلة ساقيه ، ثم إلى نصف ساقيه ، ثم إلى كعبيه ؛ فما كان أسفل من ذلك في النار
.

The Shaykh: What was your question regarding this?

The questioner: My question is about your ruling on this hadith; is it considered defective (mawquf) first with regard to Ya'qub or ibn Ya'qub? This is what I know about his status...?

The Shaykh: The problem here is that this appears to be an unknown, unidentified narrator, but the truth is that a researcher must not conclude before he has reviewed and exerted his full effort until he is able to say: this is an unknown, unidentified narrator. If that is the case, and it is my strong opinion merely from hearing this chain of narration, then the chain... all of them are trustworthy and meet the conditionsThe Shaykh : as they say; however, there is another defect ('illah) besides this man; and that is that al-Walid ibn Muslim is known for practicing tadlis al-taswiya (concealment of a defect in a chain by equalizing the levels of narration), and for one who is of this nature, it is required that he explicitly state every level of the chain as a narration (hadith), and here he does not explicitly state it at the end, so there may be some tadlis al-taswiya, in addition to the fact that this narrator from Abu Hurayrah is at least an unknown who requires specific study entirely so that we can be certain of this or deny it.
