The Practical Application of Saying: (Ameen).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The Islamic perspective on the practical application of saying Ameen between the imam and the follower?

The Shaykh : The practical application of saying Ameen, what did you say after it?

The questioner : Between the imam and the follower?

The Shaykh : You mean you want to know the image of:
Ameen آمين
?
I say, for example, I reached the end of Surat al-Fatihah:
not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray. غير المغضوب عليهم ولا الضالين
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
. The imam here may be a reciter or may be from the general people. It is permissible for the reciter to extend this extension for two movements... I say:
not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray. غير المغضوب عليهم ولا الضالين
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
, then the people made a noise with
Ameen آمين
, and I had not yet finished with...
nor those who go astray ولا الضالين
two, four, or six movements. And thereby, the worshippers must be attentive to the imam's recitation. This is what the Qur'an commanded:
Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts? أفلا يتدبَّرون القرآن أم على قلوب أقفالها
[Muhammad 47:24]
. And their contemplation of the recitation of the Qur'an necessitates that they be attentive to the imam's completion of his saying:
nor those who go astray ولا الضالين
. And they should observe that imams differ in this; some extend for six movements, and some extend for two movements. So it is necessary to observe the imam's completion of reciting:
nor those who go astray ولا الضالين
. We take a breath, as if we are the reciter. So when the imam begins with his saying:
Ameen آ
, we say with him:
Ameen آ
; such that he finishes from
Ameen آمين
, and after that we finish from
Ameen آمين
. This is in the stronger of the scholars' opinions in interpreting the previous hadith:
When the Imam says Amin, say Amin إذا أمَّن الإمام فأمِّنوا
Sunan Abi Dawud 936Sahih (Al-Albani)
. For in interpreting this hadith, there are two opinions of the scholars:
One of them—and it is the stronger, and Allah knows best—is: when he says Ameen; meaning: when he begins with:
Ameen آمين
.
And the second opinion is: when he finishes. If he begins, then begin. This is the first opinion. The second opinion is: when he finishes from saying:
Ameen آمين
; meaning: when he stops the noon, then you say after that:
Ameen آمين
. This second opinion has validity, especially regarding these people who are accustomed to racing ahead of the imam with:
Ameen آمين
. So they must control and hold their breaths when the imam reaches:
not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray. غير المغضوب عليهم ولا الضالين
[Al-Fatihah 1:7]
. The imam began and said:
Ameen آمين
. So you say after he begins:
Ameen آمين
. This is the image of how to follow the imam and not race ahead of him in his saying:
Ameen آمين
.
