The questioner : He saysThe questioner : May Allah have mercy on you and benefit you with your knowledge. Regarding Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
Between the lowest heaven and the one above it are five hundred years, and between each heaven are five hundred years, and between the seventh heaven and the Footstool are five hundred years, and between the Footstool and the water are five hundred years, and the Throne is above the water, and Allah is above the Throne, and nothing of your deeds is hidden from Him
, he said: Ibn al-Muhaddi reported it.

The Shaykh : Ibn Manda?

The questioner : He said: Ibn al-Muhaddi, al-Hammad ibn Salmah, reported it from 'Asim ibn Zur, from 'Abdullah; he said: What is the degree of authenticity of this hadith?

The Shaykh : What I know is that this hadith was narrated from other than Ibn Mas'ud with a weak chain of narration, as for this one which he mentionsThe questioner : saying: Ibn al-Muhaddi reported it, there is no narrator named Ibn al-Muhaddi, there is 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, and he is one of the teachers of Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him), but it is not said: Ibn al-Muhaddi reported it; furthermore, it is not said Ibn al-Muhaddi with the definite article al-Muhaddi; because if 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi is meant, and if the writer of this paper is 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi; he does not have a book of Ibn Mahdi such that it can be said: Ibn Mahdi reported it.
And here I remind you of the difference between the one who says: Ibn Mahdi narrated it, and Ibn Mahdi reported it; the difference is that everyone who reports a hadith has narrated it, but not everyone who narrates a hadith has reported it; because this is a technical term among hadith scholars, they say: So-and-so reported it, meaning from the collection of his hadiths that were gathered in scraps of paper or notebooks of paper, then he extracted specific hadiths and placed them in a book, he extracted it from the collection he had and narrated the hadith in one of his books, as for the one who was a narrator among the narrators of the hadith and did not have a compiled work or authorship; it is not permissible to say about him: he reported it, let us ascend to 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud here; it is not correct to say: 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported it, rather we say 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud narrated it, and you descend, 'Asim ibn Zur narrated it from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud; so it is not said: 'Asim ibn Zur reported it, but it is said: 'Asim ibn Zur narrated it, and so on, and you descend until you reach 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, 'Abd al-Rahman does not have a book; so it is not correct to say: Ibn Mahdi reported it, it is possible to say: Ibn Mahdi narrated it, or So-and-so reported it from Ibn Mahdi; this is in terms of pointing out the difference between reported it and narrated it, as for this hadith, its chain of narration does not come to mind at this moment, so if he attributed it to a book, that would be better, perhaps we would be able to refer to it.
