I leave the witr until the end of the night, but on one night I did not wake up until the time of the Fajr prayer and I left the witr. What should I do, and is the witr made up?

The questioner : I leave the witr until the end of the night, but on one night I did not wake up until the time of the Fajr prayer and I left the witr. What should I do? And is the witr made up?

The Shaykh : If a person sleeps through his witr, he makes it up during the day after the sun has risen. However, he makes it up with an even number of rak'ahs. So if he usually prays three for witr, he prays four with two taslims. If he usually prays five, he prays six with three taslims, and so on. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when overcome by sleep or pain, would pray twelve rak'ahs during the day.
On this occasion, I would like to say: Whoever is accustomed to getting up in the last part of the night should make his witr in the last part of the night, because it is better, and because the prayer of the last part of the night is witnessed. And whoever is not accustomed to that and fears that he will not get up, he should pray witr before he sleeps. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If anyone is afraid that he may not get up in the latter part of the night, he should observe Witr in the first part of it; and if anyone is eager to get up in the last part of it, he should observe Witr at the end of the night, for prayer at the end of the night is witnessed (by the angels) and that is preferable. من خاف أن لا يقوم من ءاخر الليل فليوتر أوله، ومن طمع أن يقوم من ءاخر الليل فليوتر ءاخره، فإن صلاة ءاخر الليل مشهودة، وذلك أفضل
Sahih Muslim 755a
And he ordered Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) to pray witr before sleeping, because Abu Hurayrah used to stay up in the first part of the night to review the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he had memorized. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided him, and indeed advised him, to pray witr before sleeping.

The questioner : May Allah reward you and bless you, O Shaykh Muhammad. The questioner is a woman from Makkah al-Mukarramah who says: O honorable Shaykh.
