The Shaykh : Our last lesson reached the twenty-first hadith from the "Book of Asceticism in This World," which encourages asceticism in this world and contentment with little from it, and warns against loving it, competing in it, and striving for more of it, as well as some of what came regarding the life of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in food, clothing, drink, and the like.
This is the title of the book we began reading in the last lesson, and this book is in fact the last book of the book "Al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" by al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri, for there remain between us and completing this great book in its field and unique in its subject only very few books. Following this book will be the "Book of Paradise and Encouragement to Work for It or for Its Sake," and the "Book of the Fire and Warning Against Work Leading to It."
So now we begin where our lesson stopped, which is the twenty-first hadith, according to the numbering of the copy of the book I have, which is the "Manir al-Dimashqi" edition (may Allah have mercy on him), and this hadith is from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah. The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says:
... Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The first thing for which a servant will be held accountable on the Day of Resurrection is that he will be asked: Did I not make your body healthy? And did I not quench your thirst with cold water? !
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 32:4
.
Allah, of course, addresses all His servants on the Day of Resurrection, reminding them of what He had bestowed upon them, reminding them of some examples and models, otherwise the matter is as you know from His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He):
And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them
[Ibrahim 14:34]
. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) on the Day of Resurrection in the gathering place addresses every individual of His servants by saying:
Did I not make your body healthy? Did I not quench your thirst with cold water? !
. And the meaning of this interrogation is: Did you fulfill the obligation of gratitude for these blessings I bestowed upon you, O servant? Did you fulfill the obligation of gratitude for the health I clothed your body with, and this cold water I made available for you so that you quench your body and soul with it? Did you fulfill this obligation of gratitude?
If you are grateful, I will surely increase you
[Ibrahim 14:7]
.
The relevance of the hadith is very clear in the chapter; it is that Allah (Mighty and Majestic), when He bestows upon His servants various blessings that cannot be counted or enumerated, and people differ in this, for not everyone finds money, or finds cold water at all times and in all places, but this one who may not find cold water may find a luxurious vehicle. This is a detail of the previous verse:
And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them
[Ibrahim 14:34]
. So the human being is surrounded by thousands upon thousands of divine blessings (Glorified and Exalted is He); therefore, every Muslim must fulfill the gratitude to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for His blessings, and that is only achieved by establishing the worship of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) alone, having no partner with Him.
