The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
These are hadiths that al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) cited in Riyad al-Salihin, some of which explain the virtue of martyrs. Many hadiths on this topic have preceded, and some are about the virtue of participating in jihad with a mount and an arrow. As for the first, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) mentioned that if a person is martyred in the cause of Allah, what he experiences from the killing is like a pinch, meaning like the pinch of an ant or a gnat or something similar. This means that Allah the Exalted makes death easy for him, just as He makes the exit of the soul easy, because the soul is greeted with the pleasure of Allah the Mighty and Majestic and with Paradise, so its exit is made easy, as is the case with other deceased people. Among these is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) clarified, when he addressed the people, the ruling in his saying:
do not wish for an encounter with the enemy. Pray to Allah to grant you security; (but) when you (have to) encounter them exercise patience, and you should know that Paradise is under the shadows of the swords.
Sahih Muslim 1742a
The evidence from this hadith is his saying:
Paradise is under the shades of swords
Sahih al-Bukhari 2818
And among the virtues of jihad in the cause of Allah the Mighty and Majestic is that a person who participates with a mount is written the reward of it, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Goodness is tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 3574Sahih (Darussalam)
The intended meaning of "horses" is the horses of jihad, because he explained this goodness by his saying:
The reward and the spoils.
And this only occurs with the horses of jihad, so the horses of jihad have goodness tied to their forelocks until the Day of Resurrection. It is also possible that the hadith is general, meaning all horses, whether they are used for jihad or not, due to the generality. And among them is also that a man came with a camel that had a halter on it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and said: This is, O Messenger of Allah, in the cause of Allah. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) informed him that Allah has prepared for him on the Day of Resurrection seven hundred camels, all with halters, because Allah the Exalted multiplies a good deed by ten times its like, up to seven hundred times, to many times. And among them is that helping with arrows and archery is part of jihad in the cause of Allah. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) addressed the people one day and said, regarding the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And prepare against them whatever you are able of power
[Al-Anfal 8:60]
He said:
Beware, strength consists in archery. Beware, strength consists in archery. Beware, strength consists in archery.
Sahih Muslim 1917
Archery is according to its time. In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), archery was with the bow and arrows. In our current time, archery is with bombs and missiles and the like, because every type of archery is according to the time in which the person is. We ask Allah the Exalted to make us and you among those who strive in His cause with wealth and self, for He is capable of all things.
