Among the negative consequences of their incorrect understanding is their misinterpretation of the hadith

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : One of these is that they cite His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
If you truly put your trust in Allah, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they go out with empty stomachs and come back with full stomachs. لو توكَّلتم على الله حقَّ التوكل لَرَزَقَكم كما يرزق الطير تغدو خماصًا وتروح بطانًا
Musnad Ahmad 370Sahih hadeeth) (Darussalam)
. They understood the hadith in a reversed way, saying: This is Allah providing for the birds. But they were negligent of the text and what it contains of a distinction between going out in the morning and returning in the evening; for he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If you truly put your trust in Allah, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they go out with empty stomachs لو توكَّلتم على الله حقَّ التوكل لَرَزَقَكم كما يرزق الطير تغدو خماصًا
Musnad Ahmad 370Sahih hadeeth) (Darussalam)
. He did not say: They become hungry in their nests in the morning and then become full in the evening—meaning their bellies are full—while they are in their nests. Rather, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
They go out in the morning تغدو
; meaning: They set out early in pursuit of seeking provision, and they return with their bellies full.
Thus, this hadith does not support these Sufis who interpret reliance (tawakkul) as equivalent to the meaning of laziness (tawakkul); that is, idleness and not taking the means. Rather, this hadith supports the meaning of the previous verse:
And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ
[Ali 'Imran 3:159]
. Resolve and rely, as he said:
Tie it up and rely اعقِلْ وتوكَّل
. This was when a Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) while he was on his camel; he said: O Messenger of Allah, should I tie it up? Should I restrain it and bind it, or should I rely upon Allah? He said:
No, tie it up and rely لا ، اعقِلْ وتوكَّل
. Meaning: Combine the means with reliance upon Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He).
This position—that is, combining the means with reliance upon Allah—is the position of the Muslim, and its opposite is at the other extreme. These Sufis, for example, abandon taking the means and rely upon Allah, as they claim. So these people took one thing and turned away from another. Their opposite today is the majority of Muslims due to their ignorance, whereas the Sufis are due to their deviation in their methodology. As for the majority of Muslims today, they rely upon the means, influenced in this by the European materialist methodology. We know with certainty that the Europeans today hardly mention Allah at all; rather, their foundation is their sciences, their minds, their bodies, and their taking of the means. So these are at one end, and the relying Sufis are at the other end, and both are at opposite extremes. The truth is between them, and the truth is combining the taking of every aspect of the two ends, where each of them took one end and turned away from the other. That is, we take the means and rely upon the Lord of Lords. All of this is what we draw inspiration from in this hadith which we are in the process of commenting on.
