The Shaykh : The second hadith, which is also authentic. It says: And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There is no supplication that a person can say that is better than: ما من دعوةٍ يدعو بها العبدُ أفضل من : اللهم إني أسألك العفو والعافية
Sunan Ibn Majah 3851Da'if (Darussalam)
This is the best of supplication, so memorize these two words,
Allahumma inni as’alukal-‘afwa wal-‘afiyah
Sunan Ibn Majah 2957Da’if (Darussalam)
And in another narration:
Allahumma inni as'aluka al-mu'afah fid-dunya wal-akhirah (O Allah, I ask You for Al-Mu'afah in this world and in the Hereafter)
Sunan Ibn Majah 3851Da'if (Darussalam)
It was narrated by Ibn Majah with a good chain of transmission.
In this narration, there is a request using different wording, namely: the request for protection. The protection intended here is that you are safe from the harm of people toward you, and that people are safe from your harm at the same time; because there is a sense of mutual action here. Therefore, we should ask Allah for pardon, well-being, and protection in this world and the Hereafter. That a person is safe from the harm of people and that people are safe from his harm is a very important matter. It makes us aware of the importance of this protection, or this protection, in the hadith that you have surely heard many times, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions one day:
Do you know who the bankrupt is?
They said: The bankrupt among us is the one who has no dirham and no goods. He said:
The bankrupt among you is the one who comes on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like mountains, but he comes having struck this one, insulted this one, and eaten the wealth of this one. So this one takes from his good deeds, and this one takes from his good deeds, and this one takes from his good deeds. Until when nothing remains of his good deeds, their sins are taken and thrown upon him; so he is thrown into the Fire.
This is the one who was not protected from the people; the people were not safe from his evil. So the outcome of his affair was that he entered the Fire despite the abundance of his good deeds, which the Messenger (peace be upon him) compared to mountains. These good deeds did not benefit him in any way; because the people were not safe from his harm and his evil, so
O Allah, we ask You for pardon, well-being, and protection in this world and the Hereafter.
