The Shaykh : And they do what they are commanded, and along with that, they are also described as fearing their Lord above them. So if the matter is thus between the angels, the messengers, and the scholars, then all of these, and these, and these fear Blessed and Exalted is He. And as I mentioned earlier, the more pious one is, the more fearful he is, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
By Allah, I am more submissive to Allah and more afraid of Him than you أما أنني أخشاكم لله و أتقاكم لله
Sahih al-Bukhari 5063
Therefore, it is nonsense and false, sweetened talk to quote from some of the Sufis, whether men or women, that one of them used to say in his poetry to his Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He: “I did not worship You hoping for Your Paradise, nor fearing Your Fire,” to the end of the alleged myth. It is inconceivable for a person who knows Allah with true knowledge not to fear his Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He, as we have mentioned. The closer one is to Allah, the more fearful of Allah and the more reverent to Allah Mighty and Majestic he is. And the only purpose of this Sufi myth is to lead people to live in such a way that there is no fear of Allah in them that would lead them to His mindfulness, and no desire for what is with Allah that would also lead them to increase in their mindfulness of Allah. In this chapter, you will hear many hadiths explaining that it is the nature of the believer to fear Allah, and that his fear is the cause of the forgiveness of his sins and his safety from the punishment of his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, even if this fear occurs in him in a moment of his life, while his entire life was lived in distance from Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He. The first hadith in this chapter is authentic, and it is his statement regarding Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
Seven are (the persons) whom Allah would give protection with His Shade on the Day when there would be no shade but that of Him (i. e. on the Day of Judgment, and they are): a just ruler, a youth who grew up with the worship of Allah; a person whose heart is attached to the mosques; two persons who love and meet each other and depart from each other for the sake of Allah; a man whom a beautiful woman of high rank seduces (for illicit relation), but he (rejects this offer by saying):" I fear Allah" سبعة يظلهم الله في ظله يوم لا ظل إلا ظله -فذكرهم إلى أن قال- ورجل دعته امرأة ذات منصب وجمال فقال إني أخاف الله
Sahih Muslim 1031a
Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim, and it was presented in full previously.
This hadith is well-known for its authenticity and is recorded in the two Sahihs. It was previously presented to us in one or more places, in the Book of Zakah, because it contains the phrase: “and a man who gave charity with his right hand and concealed it from his left hand,” to the end of it. There, the author presented this hadith in full. Now, he has quoted from it this phrase with which he titles the chapter we mentioned. That is because among those seven is a man who remembered Allah in seclusion and his eyes overflowed with tears, and also a man to whom a woman of high status and beauty proposed, and he said: I fear Allah. So that one who remembered Allah in seclusion and whose eyes overflowed with tears did so out of fear of Allah, and this man to whom the beautiful woman of high status proposed, when she proposed to him, said: I fear Allah. So his fear of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, protected him, and the fear of that one from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, when he remembered Him and wept out of fear of Allah, made each of them among those seven whom Allah will shade under the shade of His Throne on a day when there is no shade except His Shade.
