. . . The authentic, in this hadith there is a command for two things: the first: visiting the sick.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh: ... The authentic, in this hadith there is a command for two things: the first: visiting the sick. The other: following the funerals and accompanying them. And each of the two commands, as you hear, is absolute; meaning: there is no command directed to a specific person or group; and therefore such a command has two implications; the first is that one must act upon it; and this is specific to the one who performs this collective obligation, which is visiting the sick, and the other is accompanying the funerals, and what is beyond that is the other part of what falls under the generality of these two commands:
Visit the sick, and follow the funerals عودوا المرضى ، واتَّبعوا الجنائز
Sahih Ibn Hibban 11:65
; meaning: that this command and that command necessitate a collective obligation, if some perform it, it drops from the rest, but what drops from the rest is not the original prescription but the obligatoriness, so visiting the sick remains prescribed in general, and likewise following the funerals, but the amount that is necessary is the individual obligation as we mentioned in a past lesson regarding the discussion of the first hadith which contains:
Five things خمسٌ
;
For a Muslim over a Muslim للمسلم على المسلم
And in the other narration:
Six. ست
, and among them:
Visiting the sick عيادة المريض
.
But in this hadith, as I pointed out in a past lesson, the command to visit the sick and follow the funerals is given a legal reason; and that is that they remind one of the Hereafter, so I repeat the statement to remind you that visiting the sick and following the funerals do not become a worship that brings its doer closer to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) unless he seeks thereby the Face of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He), and from that is that he intentionally remembers the Hereafter, due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Visit the sick and follow the funerals, for they remind you of the Hereafter. عودوا المرضى ، واتَّبعوا الجنائز تذكِّركم الآخرة
Sahih Ibn Hibban 11:65
.
