Question: What is the meaning of the verse:
(1) The Striking Calamity - (2) What is the Striking Calamity? (3) And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?الْقَارِعَةُ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ
[al-Qari'ah: 1-3] to the end of the surah?

Answer: Al-Qari'ah: The Day of Resurrection. It is called al-Qari'ah because it strikes the hearing with its terrors, and this is one of its names. And it was named with many names: Al-Qari'ah, al-Sakhkhah, al-Tamim al-Kubra, al-Sa'ah, al-Haqqah, and other such names; because it is a great day, a day in which there are great terrors.

His saying, the Exalted:
(1) The Striking Calamity - (2) What is the Striking Calamity?الْقَارِعَةُ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ
[Al-Qari'ah 101:1-2]
, this repetition is for the purpose of magnifying this day, and drawing attention to the terrors that occur in it, so that the Muslim is prepared to meet it.Then, the Exalted and Majestic described that by His saying:
(4) It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed, (5) And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.يَوْمَ يَكُونُ النَّاسُ كَالْفَرَاشِ الْمَبْثُوثِ وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ الْمَنْفُوشِ
[al-Qari'ah: 4, 5] , it describes what will happen on this day of the gathering and the assembly of the creatures, and the transformation of these beings, until the firm mountains melt and become like carded wool due to their softness and melting after they were solid, strong, and hard. Then, the Exalted and Majestic described the division of people into two groups: the happy and the wretched.

As for the happy: They are those whose scales of good deeds were heavy and outweighed their evil deeds, so they succeeded in the pleasure of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, and the bliss of Paradise, abiding therein forever.

And the wretched: They are those whose scales were light, meaning that their evil deeds outweighed their good deeds, refuge with Allah, so these people failed and lost, and returned to the worst outcome, which is that the Fire is their abode and their destination forever.
