The ruling on the follower reciting al-Fatihah behind the imam in the loud prayers
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Reciting al-Fatihah in the loud prayer behind the imam: if he has recited it and begun the surah that follows, should I recite al-Fatihah?
Reciting al-Fatihah in the prayer is a pillar without which the prayer is not valid, and the evidence is general with no exception, so it is a pillar for the imam, the follower, and the one praying alone, and in both the quiet and the loud prayers. This is the correct view in this issue, and it is the school of al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him). And the evidence for that is: The generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (There is no prayer for one who does not recite al-Fatihah of the Book).
And as for the hadith: (Whoever has an imam, the recitation of the imam is his recitation), so this is a mursal hadith that is weak.
And someone might say: In the loud prayers, recitation is not obligatory upon the follower;because of His saying, the Exalted: [al-A'raf: 204], and just as the imam bears the burden of the sutrah placed before the follower, so he bears the recitation if the prayer is a loud one.
So the answer is: That this is a good view were it not for the hadith of 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed Fajr with them, and when he turned from his prayer he said: (Perhaps you are reciting behind your imam? They said: Yes,He said: Do not do so except with the Mother of the Quran, for there is no prayer for one who does not recite it), because this is an explicit text that reciting al-Fatihah is obligatory upon the follower, even if it is in the loud prayer. So when the imam finishes reciting al-Fatihah, begin reciting al-Fatihah and continue in it until you complete it, and if the imam begins reciting while you are reciting, there is no harm.
