The Ruling on the Follower Reciting al-Fatihah in Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
What is the ruling for the one praying behind the imam in the prayers where the recitation is loud? Does he only listen, or does he perform the prayer as it is obligatory for him to do if he were praying alone? I hear some of the worshippers reciting al-Fatihah quickly after the imam, without reflecting on its meaning.
Answer: There is scholarly disagreement on this issue, and the correct view is that he recites it in both the loud and quiet prayers. If his imam pauses, he recites during the pause. If his imam does not pause, he recites it and then listens. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is no Salat for the one who does not recite Fatihatil-Kitab.لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بفاتحة الكتاب
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 247Sahih (Darussalam)
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Perhaps you recite behind your imam? We replied: Yes, it is so, Messenger of Allah. He said: Do not do so except when it is Fatihat al-Kitab, for he who does not recite it is not credited with having prayed.لعلكم تقرءون خلف إمامكم؟ قلنا: نعم، قال: لا تفعلوا إلا بفاتحة الكتاب، فإنه لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بها
Sunan Abi Dawud 823Da'if (Al-Albani)
. This applies generally to both the loud and quiet prayers, but he recites it quietly and then listens.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good and do you good.
