Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (And the night when it covers)
Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: [Al-Layl: 1-4] .
So Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) swore by the night (when it covers), meaning: when it covers the earth and blankets it with its darkness, for *ghashy* means covering.
Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said:
(1) By the night when it covers (2) And [by] the day when it appears (3) And [by] He who created the male and female,
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى * وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّى * وَمَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالأُنْثَى * إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىSo Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) swore by the night (when it covers), meaning: when it covers the earth and blankets it with its darkness, for *ghashy* means covering.
