The Difference Between Certainty and Reliance

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The saying of the one who says: Certainty must be in the heart of the person regarding the Self of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and the defective certainty must be removed? The Shaykh: How?The questioner: That is: placing certainty in the heart regarding the Self of Allah and removing the defective certainty, meaning: that there is certainty in the heart regarding the Self of Allah that He is the Provider, the Benefactor, the Exalter, the Humiliator, and that one removes from the heart his certainty regarding things such as wealth and others?
This is called reliance (tawakkul), so there is no doubt that it is obligatory for the person to make his reliance upon Allah:
And upon Allah rely, if you should be believers."وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَتَوَكَّلُوا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ
[Al-Ma'idah: 23] and to make everything other than Allah merely a cause. Undoubtedly, the person relies on his salary, and for this reason he borrows against his salary and buys things on credit against his salary, but that does not mean that he relies on this as he relies on Allah. Rather, he believes that this is one of the causes. Calling reliance "certainty" is an error, and I fear that this is from the words of the Sufis or those similar to them. Reliance is not certainty.Reliance (Tawakkul): That the person relies on Allah. As for certainty, it is: That he is certain of the existence of the thing.
