Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (And We will guide you to your Lord, so you will fear Him)
Allah the Exalted said: [An-Nazi'at: 19-20] Meaning: So Moses (peace be upon him) went and said to Pharaoh what Allah had commanded him to say: [An-Nazi'at: 18-19] And since humans do not believe or accept the claim of a person that he is a messenger except with a sign, as is apparent in human nature, for a person does not accept anyone's claim except with proof, Allah the Exalted made a sign with every messenger that indicates his truthfulness,And here he said: [An-Nazi'at: 20] Meaning: I showed Pharaoh the greatest sign. What is this sign?It is: A wooden staff from the branches of trees. When he placed it on the ground, it became a living snake moving about. Then he would pick it up, and it would return to being a staff. This is among the signs of Allah: that an inanimate object, when placed on the ground, becomes a living snake moving about, and when picked up from the ground, it immediately returns to its original state, which is a staff among other staffs. [An-Nazi'at: 20] And Allah sent him with this sign and with the fact that he would put his hand in his sleeve and it would come out white, without any defect,Meaning: without any blemish,Meaning: white with a whiteness that is not the whiteness of leprosy, but a whiteness that Allah made a sign. Allah sent him with this—with the staff and the hand—because in the time of Moses, magic was widespread and prevalent. So Allah the Mighty and Majestic sent him with something that resembles magic but is not truly magic, in order to overcome the magicians who stood against him (peace and blessings be upon him).
The scholars said: In the time of Jesus (peace be upon him), medicine spread greatly. So Jesus came with a matter that baffled the doctors, which was that he would not touch anyone with a disability except that they were cured. If a person with a disability—whatever the disability was—was brought to him, he would touch them with his hand, and they would be cured by the permission of Allah. He would cure the blind and the lepers, even though leprosy has no cure, but he would cure the lepers by the permission of Allah the Mighty and Majestic, and he would cure the blind who were created without eyes.
More severe than this is that he gives life by the permission of Allah. A dead person would be brought to him, and he would speak to them, and then life would return to them. And more severe and greater than that is that he brings the dead back to life by the permission of Allah. He brings them out from any place, from their graves. He stands over the grave and calls the owner of the grave, and he comes out of the grave alive. This is something that no medicine can achieve. Therefore, the sign of Jesus in that time was perfectly appropriate to the state of the people.
The scholars said: As for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he came to the Arabs while they were boasting of eloquence and considering eloquence the greatest virtue for a person. So Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came with this great Qur'an, which baffled the masters of eloquence, and they were unable to produce anything like it,Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Isra: 88] Meaning: Even if some of them were to help others, they would not be able to produce anything like it.
We return and say: Moses (peace and blessings be upon him) showed Pharaoh the greatest sign, but did he benefit from the signs? No.
[Yunus: 101] [Ya-Sin: 11] So those who have no readiness in their hearts for guidance will not be guided, even if every sign were to come—seeking refuge in Allah—And for this he said: [An-Nazi'at: 20-21] He denied the news and disobeyed the command,And he said to Moses: saying: You are not a messenger,Rather He said: [Al-Shu'ara: 27] And he disobeyed the command, so he did not comply with the command of Moses and did not submit to his law.
Allah the Exalted said:
And I will guide you to your Lord so that you may fear Him. * Then he showed him the great sign
وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَى رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَى * فَأَرَاهُ الآيَةَ الْكُبْرَىWould you like to purify yourself? * And I will guide you to your Lord so that you may fear Him
هَلْ لَكَ إِلَى أَنْ تَزَكَّى * وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَى رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىThen He showed him the greatest sign
فَأَرَاهُ الآيَةَ الْكُبْرَىThen He showed him the greatest sign
