Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: “Have you seen [the one] if he is on the right path”
Then Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Alaq: 11-14] “Have you seen” means: inform me—O you who are being addressed—if he is on the right path. Who is meant by this? The one who forbade, Abu Jahl, or the one who prostrated, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)? The latter is meant. He says: Have you seen if this one who prostrates is on the right path, how do you forbid him from it? [Al-Alaq: 12] Some exegetes said: “Or” here means “and”, meaning: and he commanded [others] to fear Allah. But the correct view: That it is in its original sense for the purpose of variation.Meaning: Have you seen if he is on the right path by what he did of prostration and prayer, or if he commanded others to fear Allah; for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) commands [others] to fear Allah without doubt. So he is righteous in himself and a reformer for others: [Al-Alaq: 14] He sees the one who is forbidden, who is the prostrating Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), the one who commands [others] to fear Allah, and He sees this tyrannical servant (who forbids) [Al-Alaq: 10].
Then Allah the Exalted said:
